Welcome to my newest friend -
fivil.
She's written (which is how I "met" her, actually) a very, VERY good Bollywood newbie guide - I recommend everyone who has ever watched/considered watching a Bollywood (Hindi film industry) film to read it. It helps with understanding where the melodrama and the song/dance routines come from - much better than my ranting, promise. xD
SPEAKING of Bollywood films - I saw an EXCELLENT one recently - Taare Zameen Par.
Shit.
WOW. I think that (Taare Zameen Par) must have been one of the best films (or the one that most captured the essence of the storyline) I have ever seen. Bollywood, Hollywood, whatever. My eyes were red for hours afterwards - I don't think I've ever cried this much before. Yeah, me. Which should be telling you something!
The basic plot is about the journey of a dyslexic child, Ishaan Avasthi (played SUPERLY [this kid like, BETTER win a best actor award] by Darsheel Sarfary), and more importantly, the journey of those around him to realise his potential, enabled expertly by his art teacher, Ram (Aamir Khan).
It treats it’s subject matter with such delicacy and beauty - everything is realistically portrayed, to show it’s effect on Ishaan but not to overexaggurate it, if you know what I mean. His parents and teachers are cruel and not understanding - but that’s only because they want him to succeed in such a difficult world, and they think he is only being a troublemaker. His elder brother and his best friend are both straight-A students but they aren’t cruel - they try to help him and support him as much as they can. They don’t understand the pain of someone who is suffering and yet cannot express himself to explain - he isn’t a troublemaker, or a lazy student - he just can’t read.
And the camera and soundtrack combined make for an all-round excellent viewing experience - you really are seeing through a child’s eyes, and that’s what makes the film so wonderful.
Aamir doesn’t come until the second half, but he does a good turn as Ram - the only person who sees Ishaan’s problems and potential and helps him develop both - he teaches him how to read and write.
And the last scene?
*beams*
I’ll only stop raving until you go and see the film. So what are you waiting for? xD
Also saw Enchanted - the Disney animated/reality film starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey - even if the real star for ME was James Marsden as Prince Edward, and whoever played his "eeeevil stepmother". I missed the beginning - but… the film had it’s moments, I guess. And James and Amy really have the expressions of an animated Disney character down pat. The dancing/singing working scene with the animals? Um… EW! But ultimately I wasn’t convinced of the “true love” central premise of the film - or of the love between Amy/Patrick (I can’t even remember their real names!).
I guess I have a belief that there is no one true love out there for you - life and love is an adaptation process.
You’ve got to find someone who’s thinking you understand - and if you can accept that at the beginning, the rest will, hopefully, come in time.
But I’m getting off topic - and I don't think that made any sense.
