5 character deaths which affected me, and 4 which didn't...

The 5 character deaths that affected me the most ... gakked from the lovely And my response to that - 4 character deaths which did not affect me.

Both are in no particular order - and everyone who wants too is free to have a go!

Oh, and SPOILERS FOR HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS!! You have been warned!

1) Jack Dawson - from Titanic

I first saw this movie as a kid... and Jack's death was definitely one of the first profound character deaths for me. My closet romantic was torn between wanting him to survive and appreciating the poignancy his death gave to the film.

I know the scene has been lampooned alot, *smirks*, but watching that scene in the right mood never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

2) Sirius Black - Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix (Joanne Rowling)

Sirius - His character was so... good at heart, and yet so often flawed in practice - (the way he treated Kreacher and Snape, for example). I understood him - a handsome, intelligent, arrogant, impulsive young man who hated his family - and through the twists of fate became a haunted and bitter and yet still loving Harry so much...

I grieved for the tragedy of his life and the dashed hopes of what could have been for both him and Harry.

Because I’ve reached my limit of 5 trying to cover so many fandoms - I’m adding Dobby from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to this one.

Oh, Dobby. His love and his courage and his sacrifice… *weeps*

3) Max - from Season 1 Supernatural

This is a bit of a strange one, admittedly - but I really liked the character of Max, and the way the whole story around him was spun. He showed great courage in the end, I think, by taking his own life - the pain would never be removed, and he didn’t think that was something he could live with anymore. It also had a really profound impact on Sam and the way “evil” was tackled on Supernatural… there are shades of grey in everything.

4) Rehan Qadri - Fanaa or equally, the Pakistani soldier & Taliban member from Kabul Express

The terrorists. Always a difficult one - the terrorist you learn to love in a movie, who has to be killed because of the crimes they have committed. The blood spilt. The pain caused. Their courage and national pride was endearing, even if it was wrong - and sometimes for the wrong reasons. But everyone is human - and I think that’s what these deaths highlighted for me.

5) Jonathan Kent - Season 5 Smallville

Oh - Daddy Kent. Deaths are always sad - and I liked the way that it showed some of the deadly consequences that decisions can cause. The decision that Clark made. For Lana. *curls up in distaste*

Plus my own Daddy is my world, so …

Alternatively - a little meme I’ve come up with in response to this.

4 Character deaths which did NOT affect me as much as they should have (in no particular order)

1) Madison - Heart from Supernatural Season 2

This has probably shocked a lot of my f-list. But … nah. Heart was a nice change, but it didn’t really do much for me on the “omg-poor-Sammy-and-poor-Madison” scale. Possibly because around the beginning of the episode I saw it coming, and the sudden “let’s sleep together and then tomorrow I can cry and you can shoot me”… no. I didn’t really see any long lasting Sam/Madison anyway…

They were too attached, too soon. Though I suppose the close proximity of death will make you latch on to anyone more than you would normally.

Interestingly enough, I actually was more shocked and saddened by the other werewolf Dean killed - the way he became a human before he died… *shudders*

2) Fred Weasley - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (JKR)

Another surprise, perhaps. But even I was shocked by this one - and it wasn’t really my fault. The deaths, so trumpeted by JKR, were in the end really not very sad at all - and totally glossed over. A mention of his family surrounding his body, in tears, shock - and then… and then what? Grief over death isn’t momentary - a war has real consequences. I think part of this is also the fact I was grieving more for Remus and Tonks, because JKR only gave them like… what, one line? There’s an ORPHAN now, for goodness sakes!

And in the epilogue, there was no mention of what happened to George…

3) Romeo and Juliet - Romeo and Juliet (William Shakespeare)

Huh. So much for the “greatest love story of all time”…

Two lustful and hormonal teenagers who suicided because of their own stupidity. Big deal.

4) Tess Durbeyfield - Tess of the D’Ubervilles (Thomas Hardy)

Mixed feelings about this one - but by the end of the novel, I was so exasperated with Tess pathetic-ness I found it hard to really muster up feelings of sympathy or sadness. I knew I should be sympathetic, but you can only help someone when they know they are being wronged, right?
