Big Exciting Birthday Announcement

May 19, 2008 21:37

My dear friends, family, readers and listmates,

I will be 50 on my next birthday, which is JUNE 15. That is less than a month away, so get ready for some fun.

This birthday is very momentous for me. Not just because it’s one of those decade-milestone birthdays, but also because of the recent major life events that all seemed to cluster up in my late 40s. Deaths and endings of several kinds, with some new beginnings seeded and now beginning to bloom. I thought about hiding my head in the sand, lying about my age but I’d rather hit it head-on and redefine my life.

I will be starting a new business venture in a few weeks, I have some travel planned on the order of “a trip of a lifetime,” and there are other tectonic plate shifts happening below the surface, which may (with all due diligence and hard work) produce some new writing.

But enough about me. For my 50th birthday, I wanted to give everyone a present. But I really (truly) cannot afford that.

I thought some more and remembered that I really love getting birthday cards. I mean, I LOVE getting birthday cards. Real ones. In the mail. Colored envelopes, stamps, funny and clever sayings, cute kittehs and puppehs and ponies, sarcastic, silly and off-color jokes, cornball, soft-focus, flocked, pop-up, scratch-n-sniff, stickers - you name it! I LOVE CARDS.

I also totally love and collect postcards. The variety of these is far greater than cards specific to birthdays, and I have been collecting them since I was nine or 12. I’ll post one of my favorites on my blog, http://iamthiswoman.com/mainblog

On my 40th birthday, there were poems, recipes, songs and greetings from around the world. IT WAS AWESOME!

So I’m redefining 50 and I’m redefining birthday presents! What I want are CARDS CARDS CARDS! I want to ask everyone I know for a card. Postcard, birthday, greeting - handmade, store-bought, recycled, retasked - whatever. The cheesier the better, but I also love museum art, landscapes, textiles and photography.

That’s my request. In fact, not just from people I know, but people I know who know other people who know other people... Share the address below with someone, and let’s see how many degrees of separation there are between all of us.

Easy. Pick a card, write a little note in it and slap on a cool stamp. Send it to the address below. YAY! My goal is to receive FIFTY (50) cards.

BUT THERE’S MORE. No, how can there be more! JUST WAIT, THERE IS MORE!

For every person who sends me a card, I will put your name in the hat for a drawing for a present!! YES, A FABULOUS PRESENT CAN BE YOURS! Multiple cards from one person are awesome but just one card per person goes into the hat.

To make sure this is legal, there’s no purchase required, I’m asking for no money. Just say Happy Birthday to me, I’ll put your name in a hat and randomly draw names. You might be the one who gets a present back! I’ll first draw three names on Tuesday, June 17, 2008, but if more cards roll in, I might dig into the Box O’Goodies and find more stuff to send as presents! OMG PONIEZ!11!!

If you want to get really silly, you can write me the Ultimate Freecycle Gimme Sob Story (fictional only!), and really make me laugh! Or a poem or recipe... or a kid doodle. A photo of you and your dog/cat. A photo of pie... a paint chip from your living room... an appt. card from the dentist.

I might put some of the cards on my blog if they are really cool or funny or awesomely cheesy. I’ll use your initials and location only if I do unless you say not to. (By the way, the present won’t be cheesy and will be awesome.)

Here’s my PO Box.

Jay Cox aka TigerWillow Cortes
PO BOX 741133
DALLAS TX 75374-1133

Please feel free to give out this address if you think someone else might want to say Happy Birthday and maybe get a present back. I’m happy to ship anywhere in the world!

Include your address so I can send you a present. I will be collecting addresses, but will never ever give them or sell them to anyone else. And please note where you got my address so I can make a map with dots or something.

Thanks mucho!

Love and kisses,
Jay
