Adventures in Europe, Day 11: Amsterdam

Sep 12, 2008 21:16

My last proper day in Amsterdam was essentially a whole lot of lazy. Much like Tuesday, I took care of business for most of the day, the main difference being that I took some time to pack. I had intended to go downtown in the afternoon to buy postcards, but opted against that when it began pouring rain. An enjoyable but wholly uninteresting day, I am afraid.

The evening was considerably more lively, as we had a massive "Icelander party" on two floors. It all started out with Ása, Grímur, and myself cooking dinner for the residents of the commune, consisting of chicken, roasted potatoes, and salad, with vanilla-strawberry ice cream and chocolate cookies for dessert. Afterwards, we sat around sipping red wine and listening to jazz with Kristján, Steingrímur, and Björk, who came by after dinner. Ari and Grímur's elementary school friend Andreas came by a bit later, well stocked with liquor both inside and out, and served as our party's 'rowdy crowd' for a while. After midnight, we merged with a similar happening upstairs on the third floor, which is inhabited by another Icelander, an art student byt he name of Hrafnhildur. All told there were probably close to fifteen Icelanders in the building that night, a remarkable statistic. I decided to abandon ship fairly early, though, as I have a train to catch at 9:26 am tomorrow morning.
