YAY! COMPUTER! Smitty brought my suitcase and cardboard box down Monday, but because he had pretty much just gotten off a plane the
night before and Eden (who knew where my stuff was) had to go to school early to take a quiz, various things - most notably violin and laptop - got left behind, and I didn't get them until this morning. I've been practicing like crazy though - 1 hr Sat, 1 hr Sun, 1.5 hrs Mon, 2 hrs yesterda - by borrowing Amanda's violin, and I had my orchestra audition yesterday. Conductor told me to start practicing as soon as I got my instrument back, but nonetheless accepted me into the orchestra.
My classes are straightening out into my first ever all-science quarter atStanford.
GES 102: Earth Materials, is going to be such a b*tch. 3 hours of lecture, 2
x 3 hrs lab, and a discussion session every week, for only 5 units. That's
more like ten units worth of work. And the professor is dry as a doornail,
and the TAs seem kind of uninteresting too. Definitely the least appealing
class. Do, however, know several of the kids who are taking it, and like
them quite a bit.
GES 111A: Fundamentals of Structural Geology. 3 units. Should be a lot of
fun - the professor is George's old academic advisor from when he was a
Stanford undergrad, I believe, and seems like a nice fellow. The class is
mostly grad students, with only 4 undergrads, but we're graded separately
and have separate discussion sections so it shouldn't be so bad.
GEOPHYS 112: Exploring Geosciences with MATLAB. 3 units. Haven't had this
one yet, but from what I can tell, it should go just fine. I'm good with
MATLAB, so it should be a lot of practice doing more complex stuff, and a
good way of learning what it's useful for in my field of study. All grad students, though. Scary.
APPPHYS 79Q: Energy Choices for the 21st Century. 3 units. Could be very,
very educational. The professors seem lively and well informed, and the
student group is outstanding. Will definitely bring the textbooks home over
Xmas for your collective reading pleasure.
INTRO to TENNIS. 1 unit. Funfunfun. May have to get myself non-marking
shoes, though.
GERLANG 20K: German Cooking. 1 unit. Funfunfun, yumyumyum. Starts next week.
MUSIC 160: University Orchestra. 1 unit. Free A, if I don't f*ck anything up...
Gotta go, welcome back dinner for GES undergrads in 20 minutes, followed by first Stanford Symphony Orchestra rehearsal!
