"You were an island and I passed you by,
but you were an island to discover." (Coldplay, Green Eyes - from A Rush Of Blood To The Head, 2002)
I HAVE FINALLY COME INTO MY OWN AS A MATH NERD! WHEEEEE! You guys would never believe how fun it is to sit around all day and solve math problems and crack math jokes with fellow nerds. It doth royally kick arse! I mean, we just created a logo for the team T-shirts we want to make, and it will read as following:
IMO 2005, Mérida, Mexico
i = √-1
c = √(E/m)
e = lim (x→∞) (1+1/x)x - - that is, to the xth power - silly keyboard can't handle superscript
l = kx + m
a = dv/dt
n ∈ N
d = b2 (squared, that is) - 4ac
Dorkiness of doom!
I just bought the new Coldplay album, X&Y. It's really strange, in the sense that I don't understand how these guys can compose what really isn't terribly imaginative or high-quality music and still make my heart soar every time. Some people find Coldplay really dreary and depressing, but to me they´ve always signified hope - the hope that sincerity can make a better world, the hope that maybe, just maybe, somebody out there cares enough to try to understand, the hope that being steadfast and never ever ever giving up in the face of defeat is the right way to go, the hope that the scales will tip in goodness' favor before the day is done.
"When I counted up my demons
saw there was one for every day
with the good ones on my shoulders
I drove the other ones away."
- Everything's Not Lost, from Parachutes (2000)
"I stood on the edge,
tied to a noose,
but you came along
and you cut me loose."
- Amsterdam, from A Rush Of Blood To The Head (2002)
"My song is love -
love to the loveless, shown.
And it goes up -
You don't have to be alone."
- A Message, from X&Y (2005)
I mean - how can you call this depressing? This is about having faith in the good in this world, trusting other people to be there for you when you need them and being there for those who need you. And the simplicity and style of the music, which in its own way is quite elegant, just add to the sincerity of the lyrics. I certainly would be one of the first to point out weak points in both there music and words, but I sometimes get the feeling that the words and music are almost appendages to the underlying philosophical musings.
Resolution of the day: I will clean my room early Saturday morning.
Wish of the day: An extra hour in the day.
Question of the day: What do you get when you mix a fuzzy and a techie? A tezzy - or a fuckie? *doofy grin*
