A Wittle Bit of PWR Research
Dear everyone from my Fatherland,
Would you please do me a huge favor?
For my PWR research paper, which is on English-Icelandic language dynamics in the late 20th/early 21st century, I'd like to include a brief acknowledgement of a tendency I've seen within my own circle of friends and that I believe extends beyond that circle. In my observation, a number of Icelandic teenagers use the English language rather than Icelandic for communication amongst themselves in certain circumstances. These circumstances most noticeably include written communication through blogs and instant messaging - but it seems to me that the trend extends to oral communication as well, often between individuals whose English is far less sophisticated than their Icelandic.
In trying to collect a little bitty of data about this, I would like to pose to you the following questions. I will treat your responses as confidential if you so wish, of course - just say the word. Any and all information would be useful, the more detailed the better of course, but even if you only have the time to jot down a few words...
- Do you keep your LiveJournal in English? If so, why?
- Among your circle of Icelandic LJ friends, is there a trend towards using one language or the other?
- When engaged in online dialogue with Icelandic friends (LJ comments, IM, ...) what language do you usually use? How much "air time" would you say is devoted to the two languages proportionally?
- What circumstances influence your choice of language for the discourse (or parts thereof)?
- Do you ever communicate verbally with Icelandic-speaking friends in English? If yes, how frequently?
- Are there particular circumstances under which you would choose to speak English rather than Icelandic? What are they?
- And lastly - would you agree with my tentative opinion that a number of Icelanders within our own age group have begun to use English rather than Icelandic for some aspects of their interpersonal communication?
