An Assignment

When dealing with students that are out of the ordinary, you have to have to find out of the ordinary means with which to teach them.

Here is a recent writing assignment that was amazing and everyone really enjoyed -

Write "I Remember..." 10 times down a piece of paper.

Whisper the words "I remember" and note the image that fills your mind each time.

Finish each sentence by describing what flashed in your haid.

Example:

I remember dad singing in the kitchen while he cooked breakfast.

I remember a dog named Peppy that I thought was a Boston Bull Terrier.

I remember feeling frustrated and ashamed because everyone else had finished writing their alphabet except for me (1st Grade - A lost memory, believe me)

I remember standing in the diningroom and watching my eldest brother walking down the street as he headed off to meet his friends. He looked like a secret agent because he had a trench coat on.

I remember dad making me crawl into an empty (Or so he assured me) coyote den and being so scared I cried - There was no coyote, but I could see what looked like bones in the back of the 'den' (No amount of therapy will help with this - Har)

I remember putting pieces of paper on our heads and trying to draw whatever mom said and how funny the drawings were (Haven't thought of this in YEARS)

I remember twisting the swing I was on at cousin Bonnie's and as the chain unwound and spun, it ripped some of my fingernails off.

I remember asking dad a question while he played the organ and having him just look at me in a daze - So into the music he didn't even hear me

I remember looking into the eyes of my eldest when she was born and how scared and amazed I was

I remember our whole family sleeping downstairs when I was a child because it was too hot to sleep upsatirs. (I had forgotten this, or so I thought). We may have done this two or three nights.

The odd thing about this assignment is that sometimes, a memory will come out that appears only as a flash, and you don't normally think beyond it or even acknowledge it. Science says that no information we learn is every really lost, but repainted in layers of chemical prosesses over and over. Depending on how the 'image' is retrieved (State of mind, stress level, etc) the same area of the brain can retrieve countless images from the same area. Some really endearing and sometimes disturbing memories can be dredged this way. Give it a try!
