WOW!!! We got NAILED last night! Around 6-8 inches, I am guessing. School closed for the day (So, a day off for me!), roads closed, people stranded in cars. It was scary and weird, but filled with heroics by a lot of people.
For about an hour last night, a couple neighbors and I were directing traffic and helping with stuck cars. There were cars around the bend in both directions, and angery driivers would slide into each other while trying to turn around and go the other way. The road was blocked by accidents in both directions.
I called 911 to report the accidents (There were 5 that happened while we were out there), and the dispatcher said "You're on your own. Every officer that is available is already out"
"Do you have any advice?" I asked after a pause.
"Try and keep them moving and report any serious injuries. We'll try and get someone out there as soon as we can." It wasn't until about 3 hours later that a cop finally showed up. By then, I was sitting in front of the fireplace, trying to recover the use of my fingers. Even with a nice blaze in the fireplace, I hauled out the caribou hide, wrapped up in that and teeth were still chattering for several minutes. I am lucky not to have frostbite! The weird part was, it didn't feel that cold out there. The thermometer was below 30 when I came in.
So, we guided and yelled, comforted the ones who were dazed and scared, and even brought in a 9 year old who was dressed in shorts and a tank top to play video games with our boys while his dad spun bald tires on black ice for an hour. After our good deeds, I called son home and we lit a fire in the fireplace and watched movies.
Wow - My husband had a 15 minute commute that took an hour, and only because he gets off work at 1:00 AM.
Thanks to BobbyMcR for keeping me laughing while I was so 'noivous'.
Sierra was stranded at SeaTac Mall. They closed the mall an hour early, and a security guy waited with her until a friend showed up to take her home! I could not drive to get her as the road was filled with crazy people already that could not go anywhere. When her friends arrived, they were in a full sized Ford truck and they were slipping as they drove away after dropping her off.
