Since I continually bang on about my failings, some kind words from a peer review. As seems to perenially be the case these days, of three reviewers, one loved my work, one was ambivalent and one strongly disliked it, leading, of course, to a rejection. But from the positive:

"...the author makes several notable contributions to the study of twentieth-century Scottish (and, I daresay, British) literature." The critic goes on to call my work "significant" "impressive", "intersting and well-argued". Even the negative review praises my "clarity" and cogency.

Of course, failing publication, this is all somewhat meaningless, but at least there's a glimmer that someone out there gets what I'm trying to do.

It's been a week where I'm quite torn as to my future directions. Teaching is finished, barring the marking of a few late essays - and talk about pointless, these essays automatically receive zeros, but I have to give them grades anyway - and it's been a remarkably long time since I received a useful accolade (it's been around eighteen months since my last accepted article, and almost a year since my last job interview). What to do, what to do? (No, really, I'm asking.)
