This past weekend was a gorgeous one in Georgia - that point where it stops being in the 40's at night and the pollen count hasn't completely skyrocketed yet - and as such, the only way to spend it was really to head up north and pitch the tent!
ES and I headed up to
Vogel State Park, where we had a walk-in site on a hill with a stream within easy hearing distance for Friday and Saturday nights. Given that the car was parked about a 1 minute walk (if that) from the car and that we had a cooler at our disposal, going all out with dehydrated meals perhaps was a bit excessive. That being said, I wanted to try out some new things - given that I haven't yet managed to acquire my own
food dehydrator yet, I was a little bit more limited in experimentation when it came to dinners. Breakfast, however, was prime for experimentation. Also, this way, the prime space in the cooler was reserved for the beer and Bailey's - because it isn't car camping if you don't have some Bailey's in your hot chocolate :-)
The trip was also an excuse to try out my new camp stove (yay for birthdays!) - while
this wouldn't work for backpacking, it worked great for the car, and I would also guess that it would work great for canoe camping as well. No matches required and very easy to use!
Anyway - Dad and
cynic51 - both of these hot cereals were good and might be an excellent breakfast alternative for BWCA this year. If you only try one, try the oatmeal one, as I think I would eat this one for breakfast even when I wasn't camping.
From
The Back-Country Kitchen: Camp Cooking for Canoeists, Hikers and Anglers by Teresa Marrone:
Hot Cereal with Fruit - serves 2 people
1. Combine the following in a pint plastic zipper bag:
1/2 cup granola
1/3 cup quick-cooking oatmeal or multi-grain cereal
1/3 cup chopped dried fruit (I used dates)
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
2 TBSP brown sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2. At camp: in medium pot, boil 1 cup water. Add mix. Cook for 5 minutes or until oatmeal is done, stirring often to prevent sticking.
Hot Breakfast Nuggets - single serving
1. Place in a small plastic bag and seal with a twist-tie:
1/2 cup Grape Nuts or other wheat-barley nugget cereal
1 TBSP plus 1 tsp nonfat dry milk powder
1 heaping tsp diced dried fruit (again, I used dates)
1/2 tsp sugar
1/8 tsp Butter buds (I omitted this)
2. At camp: empty contents of one bag in a serving bowl or large cup. Add 1/2 cup boiling water, stir well and enjoy.
