Ayup. She's beyond awesome. I mean, there's NO chance of her screaming helplessly, so that already sets her apart, plus while I appreciate intelligent companions, having one more intelligent than the Doctor is just Mary Sue-ism(excepting for Time Ladies, of course), so the best you can usually hope for is one intelligent enough to keep up, but Leela's smart in a completely different way, and thus makes very useful contributions! And she's quite funny unintentionally, AND she's the reason we have K9. Plus, extremely hot. So I'm going through all the episodes with her on YouTube and enjoying myself thoroughly.
"She doesn't stand around and scream helplessly. She makes other people do that." See, that's why I'm such a Romana fan. She's very intelligent, as much as the Doctor, knows it, and isn't afraid to let him know it and call him on his bullshit. But she's also very fond of him and not afraid to express it like him. Also why I'm fond of Barbara. She isn't as smart as the Doctor, but she does call him on his bullshit. Frequently. Especially when he gets rude. And, unlike most of his female companions, she's not in love with him; she very clearly has the hots for Ian, so the fans don't have to deal with mushy crushes and maudlin stuff from her. ...actually, that may be why I'm fond of One in particular. He was a cranky old bastard, so none of his companions really fell in romantic love with him, though all of them felt very affectionate towards him. Made for a less...mmm...complicated show.
