teaching

i've been toying around with this idea for a while now. i haven't really told anyone. so here goes. if you manage to read all this, let me know what you think.

no one in my family really knows, but i've been talking with one of my aunts and one of my cousins in the Philippines about this idea i've had for about a year now. my aunt is a teacher at a public school in the village where my grandparents live and where i was born and my cousin is an architectural engineer major in college. he's a year older than me. anyways, a year ago i started to get interested in the teaching conditions in the Philippines. they're not so good to say the least. the school itself is a little better than a shack. in letters that i get from my cousin, his nickname is Ai-Ai, he says he's been thinking of going to work for this special construction group that is like a charity group that gets money from the government to help make better houses and things like that. it's sad, so many people really do live in shacks. they're literally a couple pieces of wood with maybe a dozen nails holding it all together. and a family of 5 is supposed to live in it. anyways, we were thinking of combining education with engineering. something like improving housing and building schools and turning focus in the Philippines away from getting out of it and going to, for example, the U.S. but staying around to help improve living conditions through education and engineering. so, in response to some peoples claims that I shouldn't have quit engineering b/c i really do enjoy some aspects of it, i might be going back to it in a way. but i've definitely been thinking of moving to the Philippines after college for a while and seeing what my cousin, aunt and i can do with our little idea. so, until then, nobody tell my parents. they might not be quite so enthusiastic about the idea.
