FOA ROCKS!!! (foodwise) Today we made chilean and peruvian food. it was A LOT of food. the highlights of today's class was ceviche, trout tacos, and banana ice cream. making the ceviche was cool because we had a lot of seafood to work with and it was a complete group effort for it. our ceviche consisted of shrimp, octopus, scallops, and calamari. the seasoning could have been better (more acidic and some black pepper would have done the trick), but it's the first time i've ever had ceviche and i liked it so it was good for what it was.
my group in particular was assigned to make trout tacos. i didn't think very highly of them, but adriana said they were really good, so it makes me feel like all the work i put into pin-boning the damn trouts was not spent in vein.
and damn, banana ice cream. it's good stuff. i never thought that combination would work, but i know now that if it's properly executed it's totally good.
yesterday, i killed my first lobster. i thought it was gonna be a whole lot worse, but the act of doing it isn't half as bad as physically watching the act of killing it. our lobster, coconut, pineapple stew came out pretty good too. i probably would have like it to be thicker, but we didn't take the time to cracked the shells so i don't know if that would have made a difference. i learned something new too. i totally didn't know that lobster and crab shells are edible, but they are. also notable about day two was mango-pineapple fresca and cassava cake. i've never had that cassava cake before and it's good too.
foa is some seriously good eats. that is probably contributed in large part to the amount of fat we use in cooking all this food, but it's been good and well worth it. our class also got bigger by 9 people, but today like 6 of them didn't come to class so maybe the whole oversized class thing won't be that bad if those ppl keep on not showing up to class.
on book related news, i finally scored a copy of julie and julia by powell from the library. i've been reading a butt load lately and not exactly sure why, but i guess it's good for me?
