Dear God/Lord/The Big Guy in the Sky/The Powers That Be:
I know we don't talk much, but I am begging you to keep me strong today. You see, we humans have invented this day called "Black Friday", where people act like retarded inbred monkeys and trample over each other at three in the morning in order to buy things. They claim that these things are for Christmas presents, but it seems to me like running people over and pushing and shoving in order to buy material objects betrays the idea of the holiday. I thought it was about peace on earth and goodwill toward men, or something like that, but evidently it's about, well.. acting like retarded inbred monkeys. Oh, and spending money that you don't have.
Anyway, Big Guy, my point is, I'm asking for a little extra patience and calm when dealing with these people. I'm one of the lucky ones, honestly, because my place of work doesn't open until 8am, which is late by Black Friday standards. There have been stores open since three a.m. already. But as you may have noticed, customers where I work tend to be a little... well, "batshit insane" is probably putting it mildly.
If you could, look out for my friends who are also working retail today. It really sucks. We don't get a long weekend like the rest of the world does, and I know at least where I work, we're required to work this weekend, so anyone who wants to go out of town to see their families can't. We work very long hours and spend time away from our families during the holiday season, and while we're at work we're often griped at by impatient people who somehow ignore the fact that we're incredibly, ridiculously busy and expect to be waited on hand and foot.
In short, many people who work in retail loathe the holiday season. That kind of sucks. I know I personally can't even afford much in terms of presents this year, and I really don't want to go shopping for them anyway.
It shouldn't be that way, you know? But that's our society, I guess. Christmas isn't really about giving or being charitable anymore. We're bombarded by advertisements on T.V. that promise our families will love us more if we buy them expensive things.
I guess I'm just rambling. It's not like you can just zap everyone from up above and make it right again. We have to do that on our own. I'm just saying, it makes me sad that the attitude towards this holiday is pretty materialistic. I'm not saying everyone needs to go to church and repent or anything, I just wish more people were conscious of how stupid they act during the holiday season. You know, maybe instead of getting up at three a.m. to trample people in a shopping mall, they could go buy some stuff for the Food Bank or Toys for Tots. You know? Or even stay home and spend extra time with their families.
Maybe I'm just jealous because I never get to enjoy this weekend. That's probably it.
Well, thanks for listening, Big Guy. Wish me luck.
