Mostly, Dean makes conscious decisions to lie- to family, to colleagues and law enforcement. Sometimes, though, reality simply takes a detour between his brain and his mouth because, despite all evidence to the contrary, it’s imperative that what he’s saying be true.

He gives Sam a roll of gauze to bite down on and heats the blade he’ll use to carve out the bullet.
This lie is always meant for him as much as for Sam. Maybe more. Because it’s got to be all right for Dean so he can make it all right for his brother.
