hey everybody! hope you're all doing well 💖 i've been playing borderlands 3 dlc's, league (arams only), watching
prozd plays games, my favorite booktubers, and just reading a lot. i recently finished dragon warrior and its sequel "fallen hero" by katie zhao, dial a for aunties by jesse q. sutanto, caught up on way of the househusband by kousuke oono and my next life as a villianess by nami hidaka and satoru yamaguchi, and i started jade city by fonda lee not too long ago. i have reviews on
my goodreads here-feel free to add me too! that reminds me friends: if you still want a readerly app invite code, let me know! i have 3 remaining codes to give away 😊
i tag all of my LJ friends to participate in this tag! these questions will be easier to answer if you dnf books.
1) Do you DNF (do not finish)? 2) If you DNF a book, does it count toward books read for the month? 3) Is there a difference between DNF and "just putting it down for a bit"? 4) What popular book(s) have you DNF'd? 5) What book(s) do you wish you DNF'd? 6) Do you ever re-attempt to read a DNF? Has this ever been successful for you? 7) What do you do with books that you DNF? 8) Do you choose more or less risky titles because of your stance on DNF'ing? 1) Do you DNF (do not finish)?
yes! i used to really beat myself up for even considering dnf'ing, but now i don't care. i have nothing to prove and i don't care what people think LOL over the years, i learned to put a lot less pressure on myself to do things i don't need to be doing. also my bullshit tolerance is significantly lower now.
2) If you DNF a book, does it count toward books read for the month?
it depends why i dnf'd a book. if i dnf because the author wrote something so egregious that i don't think anyone but my enemy's eyes should be subject to reading such content, then i'll give it a rating. but if i'm dnf'ing because i'm simply not in the mood for the book in the moment and i want to come back to it, i won't give it a rating. all of my dnf's so far have been because the books are just bad.
3) Is there a difference between DNF and "just putting it down for a bit"?
for me, yes. dnf'ing is for books i never plan on returning to and nobody else should ever touch the book. "just putting it down" is like another "i'll get back to it when i'm in the mood for it."
4) What popular book(s) have you DNF'd?
oooh god so many...i'll limit it to 5 recent ones
- acotar by sarah j maas (i really tried)
- serpent & dove by shelby mahurin
- stormdancer by a racist mister no one should pay attention to
- food wars by that pedophile hentai artist 🙄
- the help by who cares this shouldn't exist blechh
5) What book(s) do you wish you DNF'd?
besides almost every school-assigned book? LOL these violent delights by chloe gong. i loved the last 40 pages but the first 400 pages of glacial pacing with great social commentary mini-essays couched between nonsense? i was screeeeaming for it to end. my s/o was like "why don't you just stop?" but it was my first asian diaspora-written novel in years. like it was sooo hyped and i'd been following its production up until release for the longest time. i couldn't NOT finish...but i wish i did. i love chloe gong, but this book was a miss.
6) Do you ever re-attempt to read a DNF? Has this ever been successful for you?
ya, i've tried to reread some american classics that i read from school but no, they weren't successful. it was books like catcher in the rye, lord of the flies, and 1984. they put me into years-long reading slumps. i will never give school required reading a chance ever again.
7) What do you do with books that you DNF?
luckily most of the books i dnf'd are digital and free. if i even suspect i might not like a book, i borrow it from the digital library. if it's something i own, i just try to sell it or give it away to someone who might enjoy it.
8) Do you choose more or less risky titles because of your stance on DNF'ing?
because i dnf liberally, i don't mind taking a chance on titles i might think is just okay. i refuse to read books from problematic authors and i won't read a book i think i won't like at all.
