History: Finnick was the Victor of the 65th Hunger Games. For those unacquainted, the Hunger Games are a huge event held every year in Panem, the country Finnick is from. The Hunger Games are a punishment that the Capitol of Panem has imposed upon its twelve districts for the last three quarters of a century in response to a failed rebellion. The rules are simple. The names of all the children in the districts between the ages of twelve and seventeen are placed in a lottery, and one boy and one girl from each district are chosen as Tributes. All twenty-four children are placed into an arena where they must fight to the death. The whole event is televised and mandatory viewing for every citizen of Panem, from the Reaping, when the names are chosen, through an interview with the Victor, after all the other tributes are dead. Finnick was born in District 4, the fishing district, and was raised on boats and in the ocean. At fourteen, he was reaped and became a Tribute in the 65th Hunger Games. A very attractive boy with bronze hair, golden skin, and sea green eyes, he was very popular with the viewers. Throughout the Games, people may send in money to aid the Tributes. Because of his looks, he gained enough sponsors that they presented him with his preferred weapon, a trident, which he then used to systematically trap the other tributes in a net and skewer them with the trident.

After the Hunger Games, however, his looks and charm worked against him. The Capitol retained full control over his life and as soon as Finnick turned eighteen, he began selling Finnick's body to the highest bidder, using him as a tool, as he saw fit. As a Victor, he was also forced to mentor future tributes from his District, and the Victor of the 70th Games was a mad girl named Annie Cresta, who only won because there was a flood and she was the only one who knew how to swim well enough to survive. Annie wormed her way into Finnick's heart and he fell in love with her over the years. Unfortunately, President Snow was aware of this fact, and used it against Finnick, threatening Annie if Finnick didn't give Snow exactly what he wanted. He began to deal in secrets; the people who used him for his body loose with their tongues in his bed. He learned very interesting things about many of the higher-ups in the Capitol, including the President himself.

Ten years after Finnick's victory and five after Annie's, was the third Quarter Quell, a special Hunger Games held every twenty-five years to reinforce the message of the Games. In the 25th, the Districts voted for their Tributes. In the 50th, there were twice as many children reaped. And in the 75th, the Tributes were reaped from the existing pool of Victors. Both Finnick and Annie were chosen from District 4 (A way for the President to ensure that only one of them could survive), but Finnick's mentor in his Games, an elderly woman named Mags, volunteered to take her place. A second rebellion was in the works during the Quarter Quell, and before it even started a plan was hatched to escape from the arena, and to get Katniss Everdeen (one of the two Victors of the 74th Hunger Games from District 12 and an unwitting figurehead in the rebellion) in particular out. He worked to protect her and her fellow Victor from her Games, Peeta Mellark (also of District 12), and in doing so, lost Mags, his friend and mentor. He made it out of the arena when the escape plan came to fruit, but President Snow had found Annie before she could be secured by the rebels. Finnick and the other escapees made their way to District 13, a district that had disappeared off the map after the last rebellion, but had secretly been flourishing. In District 13, Finnick basically went insane with worry, unable to function for months while she was in the Capitol, spending his nights tying knots in a small length of rope, to hold onto whatever sanity he could manage. A plan was hatched to rescue Annie, along with Peeta and another Victor, Johanna Mason (of District 7), and it was successful. Finnick was absolutely overjoyed to have Annie back, and the two were married fairly shortly after their reunion. The two held one another together.

The rebellion became a full-fledged war. Finnick joined the war-effort, as he had impressive combat skill, and the fame and notoriety to inspire the districts. He was put in a special division along with fellow Victors Katniss Everdeen, and Peeta Mellark, and a camera crew. They filmed promotional videos for the war effort, but during a taping, there was a real attack, and Katniss Everdeen took charge and led the division into the Capitol, as Katniss was on a personal mission to kill President Snow. During their mission, they were attacked by a group of mutated lizard creatures. Finnick was decapitated by one of these creatures and killed while trying to escape by climbing a ladder. After his death, Annie gave birth to a son. [Finnick's Hunger Games Wiki Page for more info!]
Personality: I'm taking Finnick directly following his death. He's still his enigmatic, outgoing, charming self, charming the ladies and gentlemen alike, but he's a deeply wounded person. It devastates him to be away from Annie, and he'd been aware of her pregnancy when he died, knowing he'll never meet his son. He's also got symptoms of PTSD from his experiences in both the 65th and 75th Hunger Games, and then in the war. He'll use his charm and good looks to avoid letting these symptoms show, but he suffers from nightmares and without Annie beside him can fall back into a dark place where he has to just sit awake at night and tie knots in a small length of rope just to hold onto his sanity. He's pretty sure that the rebels won the war, and that Annie and his child are safe, but the rebels winning didn't mean that they were okay. He wanted to be there to protect them. But he'll try to hide this, despite the absentmindedness and the dark circles under his eyes. He'll flirt, he'll charm, he'll befriend, he'll fall apart and tie himself back together. He ties knots.

Strengths: Finnick is really really ridiculously goodlooking. As Derek Zoolander would say. The Victors of the Games are public figures, and he is well-loved by the Capitol. This comes to his advantage in his Games. He had enough sponsors with enough money to contribute that his sponsor was able to send him a trident, his weapon of choice, at a key point in his games. Without the trident, the chances of him winning would have gone down significantly. His skill in battle is also a strength! As previously mentioned, his weapon of choice is a trident, but later in the series he proves to be proficient with a rifle as well. He is put into a special sharpshooter division in the rebel army because of his skill with both weapons. He's also a fabulous swimmer, because he grew up in District 4, the fishing district, and spent his entire childhood in the water. Emotionally, he's both stong and weak. He's been through a lot, so he's a very compassionate, understanding person who can work through problems in times of crisis.

Weaknesses: He doesn't have any physical weaknesses to speak of, although President Snow uses his physical beauty to his own advantage, basically whoring Finnick out for his own gains. Finnick does have a lot of mental and emotional issues. Like I mentioned above, he has symptoms of PTSD from his experiences in both Games and the war, as evidenced by his nightmares, and anxiety attacks, which are particularly bad when he's worried about someone he loves. At one point, he has an anxiety attack so severe he has to be sedated, and often stays up all night tying knots to keep himself from falling asleep and having terrible nightmares.

First Person: [private, he's writing to hold himself together, as suggested by the therapist at the hospital in Thirteen]
My name is Finnick Odair. I won the 65th Hunger Games. I escaped from the Quarter Quell. I am married to Annie Cresta, and she's going to have our baby. I won't ever get to meet him, because I died today. I died today, and then I woke up. And now I'm in some kind of forest and this notebook was just...here. I assume it's mine, but I don't know anything for sure anymore. Did I really die, or am I just going crazy? Maybe I hallucinated that whole thing with the mutts and this is some kind of morphling dream where I have wings. I'm not sure of what I'm supposed to do and I'm losing it. I need a small length of rope.

Third Person:
Finnick woke up, curled in a ball and shivering. He still had the sickening smell of the roses that were on the breath of the Mutt that had killed him.

Killed him.

He jerked up into a sitting position, trying to figure out what had just happened. The mutts had been right behind him, there was no way he could have been pulled out in time...and this definitely wasn't the sewer system beneath the Capitol, or even the streets above. This was...a forest. There was a dim light shining through the trees and he stood, turning to see trees in every direction. His first thought was that he was back in the arena, somehow. That he hadn't really died, that Snow had gotten him back in his clutches and was torturing him by putting him back in the arena, but...then he remembered again. Strange, how he kept forgetting.

He was dead. Undeniably and certifiably and as greusome as it was to recall...he had been decapitated. They say the brain remains alive for about twelve seconds after decapitation, and he didn't exactly remember what had happened, but he was very certain that he hadn't survived what had happened to him. So...was this heaven? He turned again, this time catching a glimpse of bronze at his shoulder. As he spun to catch sight of the bird he was sure he'd seen, he realized the feathers were attached to his own back, the color of the feathers identical to that of his hair. He leaned against a tree, sinking back down to the forest floor. Yes, this must be heaven. Or somewhere like it. An afterlife.

He sat there for a long time, but nothing happened other than the sun going down slowly through the branches of the trees. Finnick was beginning to panic. Wasn't something supposed to happen now?
