So I'm on a bus with a friend from the uni (hate the public transport, but what can you do...) and we're talking about the scholarships, about how we've been received abroad and how stereotypes look in Germany and France and in other countries.
At the time we were talking about how me and a girl from Finnland managed to convince a French girl and another one from the States that you can keep polar bears in Poland and Finland and that they can be troublesome, when taking them for a walk. They believed us without battling an eye (but that's another story, i think). Anyway, there comes thins guy, when we're discussing how much people know about their neighbouring countries and what not. So he comes up and asks us if we know what states border with Texas. So i tell him, mentioning by the way, that i don't have to know it and that there is a difference between knowing provinces of countries and countries. He said that since it's 'Republic of Texas' and a 'state' than it's a country.
Enlightment! I finally know what was wrong with my perception of the world! This man exposed the ugly lies that were fed to me since i was but a child! Poland is not a country! It's a province of European Union, which is a federal country! And there are EU embassies! And he knows the ambassador!
Not to mention i should probably know all there is about Texas, because it's bigger than Poland is. Huh. Kamchatka is bigger too and somehow i don't have to know neighbouring provinces.
So this guy argues with two poli-sci majors (about to graduate) about EU, Texas and whever we're a country or a province. Not very smart, not to mention pretty rude to cut in on a private conversation. But, well, at least i learned new things today.
Thank God for noisy little fuckers, because otherwise i would live secure in my belief that Texas is one of the federal states of the USA and that Poland is a country. Now I finally know the truth! It's out there!
