TOMORROW
Sam whimpers.
Adrian’s immediately awake, sitting up abruptly, floundering among the tangled sheets, squinting into the dark. He moves to fumble for his glasses on the nightstand, bangs his wrist on the corner of the wood, and hastily draws it back, gritting his teeth. Hell with it; he doesn’t need the damn things anyway, not for this.
He reaches out for Sam’s arm, finds it, grips it, and strokes his palm down a shoulder-blade and then a spine.
It’s bent inward, that spine, to facilitate its owner’s having curled into the fetal position, and that shoulder is shaking.
Adrian eases himself down at Sam’s side, sliding both arms around him, drawing the tousled head gently to his chest. The hot, hitching breath against his neck gradually slows, and the shuddering stops.
“Adrian?” Sam whispers.
“Yeah?” Adrian asks.
Sam nestles closer to his neck. “I love you.”
Adrian holds him just a little closer and smiles.
Tomorrow, when he’s struggling not to fall asleep during the staff meeting after school, this will get him through.
