It's sort of interesting working through Fringe and seeing how it's a more standard telling of the 'man walks into the Underworld' storyline - also Sanctuary's premise.
Fringe is more standard than Sanctuary, because the focus is the everyman character - Olivia - while Sanctuary is focused on the mentor-of-the-everyman - Helen. It's less standard

The stuff with John Scott? That's all a red herring. The episodes that are recced in the link above are probably the ones you want to watch for the full mytharc effect: 1.14 - Ability, 1.16 - Bad Dreams, 1.18 - (I can't remember the title), 1.19 - The Road Less Travelled, and 1.20 - There's More Than One Of Everything.
I enjoyed the 1st half of the series (sort of, some of the stuff was kinda squicky), but the 2nd half is when it kicks off!
