So, I read the Beginner's Guide To Necromancy series by Hailey Edwards and have really enjoyed it. Even the 7th book which was...not as good as the others.
I actually got into her sequel series first - The Potentate of Atlanta - the third book of which is due to come out midway through this year. And while the first book was good enough, I have enjoyed the second book quite a bit more.
Confession: I'm a sucker for jealousy/angst storylines, most particularly where:
- it's the woman who has multiple suitors
- it's the guy who's jealous
- it's shown rather than told
- it's not a violent jealousy but one with quiet angst potential
- he's the 'do anything for her' kind of guy
What can I say? I have a type.
Beginner's Guide To Necromancy had this in SPADES and I loved it. Rolled around in it like a dog in...well...anything. Also: matriarchal society, arranged marriages where the parties are contractually engaged to each other but he doesn't want to be hers because of a contract he wants to be hers because she wants him (but he'll take the contract); slow falling in love and trying to work things out and her not quite knowing how to deal with it romantically but being quite comfortable with it in friendship terms...seriously, it's like that series was written specifically for my id.
Potentate of Atlanta kind of has the jealousy-angst storylines on both sides, but treated with a light hand. It's not heightened for the heroine, and the hero 'marks' her pretty early on in the first book but is clearly struggling with his attraction to her (because of Reasons involving past trauma). The scene/speech where he acknowledges her equal dominance is excellent, and the one where he basically initiates a courtship between them (six weeks to test if it works) is wonderful...
But the angst-bunny in me kind of wants her family (either the one she's been disowned from or the one that's adopted her) to have an arranged marriage for her to someone else while the hero has to look on...
Anyway; I'm really enjoying this author.
