life and updates

You know when you have those days when you don’t quite feel like anything is right? I’m having one of those.

Like I didn’t sleep, my skin is hot and itchy like I’m sunburned (I might be), and what I really want right this instant is a toasted cheese sandwich, which I can either buy or source the ingredients for but…ughhh…effort.

(Honestly, lately everything is uggggh effort.)

On Saturday, I learned how to prune my apples (I may have been doing it wrong the last three years!!) and also how to graft apple types onto my trees. Except that I didn’t have the time or space to do this on Sunday (got some work done in the garden which was fine) and while I’ve sealed up what I can of the apple scions I got from the lady who taught us the course, I’m not sure how long they’ll last. Best to graft them ASAP. (But some equipment would probably also help. And moving the chickens so they're not right next to the apple trees, which I can’t do right now because the backyard isn’t ready for them…)

One of the guys who helped at the permabee at my house the other week is looking for gardening exercise before he starts a new job, and offered to do any labour-intensive jobs around the place. Which is…well, seriously, I’d say it was an answer to prayer, but I didn’t pray for this! He turned up on Sunday by arrangement, turned my mulch in a matter of hours, said he could come some days during the week if I told him what to do, then headed off to church to spend some time with his kids (there’s an ex, I gather it’s messy). I paid him in a cup of coffee and a jar of seville orange marmalade. It was AWESOME.

Anyway, he’s willing to come back, so yay for getting someone to do some heavy-effort jobs that would otherwise wreck me!

So Sunday morning was gardening (and tbh, is probably why I feel sunburned), Sunday afternoon was hockey support - it’s the last game of the season, and both Team 2 and Team 3 got into the semi-finals, with Team 2 being 2nd in their division and Team 3 just squeaking into 4th place. So lots of cheering next weekend, and we shall hope that all our teams make it through!

I did almost no writing this weekend. Tonight, I say, ignoring the many citrus that I probably need to get rid of before it rots in the box…

Maybe I’ll just hang the box of on the fence and let people take it? Except some asshole would probably take the box (which I made from recycled wood). There’s a few assholes around the suburb - the kind who leave their dogshit on your front verge. I might contact a few people directly and see if they want some citrus.

Parents are moving back to Sydney after 18 months up at the Central Coast. This was always the plan, because they sold their house to get a better price for it, but then their new place wasn’t ready in time and has been fussing with the last details for the last four months. Moving day is…today, actually. My stepfather is probably grumpy (well, even more grumpy than usual). He’s gotten very imperious of late; and it’s stressful on all the women of the family except those who cheerfully ignore him (me) or avoid him (B2). This is probably why his sons are very careful about limiting their time with him. Speaking of which, I have an article about broken relationships between parents and children and, well, online discussion about it. I’ll post it in a big links thing this week.

It will be nice to have the parents close again, though.
