Some time back in May I finally got caught speeding up in NY on my way to the Galleria. No big deal I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. I managed to slow down before he shot me with the radar gun and afterwards I could have easily gotten away and now its obvious that I just should have. It took him a full minute to catch up with me due to traffic during which time I passed an exit and he caught up with me at the 2nd one.
He came off really nice and here I figured he thought I woulda taken off or something so he was gonna cut me a break. Five minutes later as I'm pulling away I look at the ticket it turns out the ass wrote me up for doing 87 in a 65, a 22 mph violation. After going home I looked up the info about the ticket and after a while find that its a 5 pt ticket by TWO mph. After that I look up info on NJ drivers getting a speeding ticket in NY and all the consequences on insurance and such and it turns out that no matter how many points a ticket is in NY, NJ views it as a 2 pt moving violation. This is where I made a mistake aparently and didn't fight the ticket.
My logic was why waste the gas and time to drive an hour each way, wait around and make a plea/deal when all it would do is reduce the ticket and NJ would still view it the same, a 2 pt moving violation. So I paid my $170 ticket and the lovely $55 processing fee so I wouldn't get my license suspended in NY and figure ok its done - its the cost of driving fast so it didn't bother me too much. That brings us up to today and me wanting to strangle that damn cop for that 2 mph.
Today I get a letter from NY DMV and its a Driver Responsability Assesment Statement; lawyer jargon for "Bend over and take this like a man too". Aparently as of November 18th of last year any driver that accrues 6+ points in an 18 month period has to pay $300 or $100 over 3 years. Seeing as this is my only speeding ticket I wanted to know how I had 6 points rather then the 5 I swore it was when I first looked. I checked the DMV homepage again and of course, its 6 points for a 22mph speeding ticket. Lucky me I checked an out dated points chart when I was looking up info before and this is where not fighting the ticket bites me. Now I get to choose between not driving in NY or paying another $300, a total of $525 in fines for one fucking ticket. Decisions decisions.
