Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Alianora knows the classic princess things. She can dance, speak other languages, agree with diplomats without actually promising everything, dress well, smile on cue, appear to be paying attention, read, and write.
Over the course of canon, she casts a fireproofing spell with the main character, providing her with a brief time of being completely fireproof (even her clothes) if she tosses a pinch of dried feverfew in the air and recites a couplet. A fairy also gifted her with perfect teeth, and she can spin straw into linen thread.
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? I'd like to give her the ability to teleport--herself only, at first, with the possibility of taking along another person if she ever learns about it/trains herself up. She could only put herself places she felt secure going to and had seen before.
Weapons: none.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History:
Alianora has never been a quite satisfactory princess. When put in scenarios that usually led to the princess in peril and a hero emerging to save her, she tends to go through them without mishap. Evil fairy invited to her christening? Relax, the fairy will have the time of her life and leave without cursing anyone. Put her in a room with a needle-tipped spindle? She's fine. Forced to spin straw into gold? Well, she can spin a lovely linen thread... but no, no gold.
When she's kidnapped by a dragon--likely through the designs of her aunt, who wants to get her married off to a good prince--she learns to sneak around the dragon and befriends other princesses of more determined personality. When she meets the protagonist Cimorene, Alianora visits often, listens to her news and stories, and helps her to plan. Although her first real move is to lie so that she can spend her time making a new friend, she later acts with more determination to help Cimorene. After all, it's only the right thing to do.
Cimorene helps Alianora find clothes to clean in shortly after meeting her. Cimorene also thinks of a fireproofing spell and looks for one in her dragon’s library. Alianora finds some spell ingredients at her own dragon’s cave, while Cimorene goes and meets with a witch and makes deals with a genie for the other ingredients. Cimorene translates the spell and casts it with some participation from Alianora.
Cimorene later meets a Stone Prince who knows key details about a plot with the wizards against the King of the Dragons, and hides him away. Alianora tells Cimorene she shouldn’t have left him standing in the dark while she ran around trying to stop wizards. The prince tells them the wizard would have noticed a torch, telling them that the wizards had come once more secretly to the dragon’s caves and giving away the identity of a traitorous dragon, not to mention nullifying Alianora’s idea. They are then confronted by a wizard who checked back to be sure nobody had heard. When he threatens the Stone Prince by pointing a blazing staff at him, Cimorene is too far away to help. Alianora tells the wizard to stop it, and when he moves to attack the Stone Prince, she shouts it again and throws a bucket of water at him (since he fell down only because he slipped, Alianora probably just threw the water and kept her grip on the bucket.) It turns out that soapy water and lemon juice melts wizards, and he shrinks into the puddle and is gone.
With no time to spare, Cimorene rushes off to ask the witch for help, taking Alianora with her. The two of them, the Prince, and Morwen all go to find that the wizards are interfering in the choosing of a new Dragon King. Fortunately, one is a witch, one is made of stone, the four of them have their buckets of soapy water, and Cimorene has the last piece of knowledge and the magical item needed to stop the spell…
Point in Canon: Just before the showdown at the end of the book. Her character is well established by then.
Character Personality:
Alianora tends to be more a wallflower around people who seem to know what they're doing, following rather than leading, as she's been schooled to all her life. Fortunately, she's had a bit less princess-ly upbringing than the richest of princesses, so she'll be careful of who she follows. Once she's aware of her options, she will take them. If Alianora were stuck on an island bored and hungry, and was to make friends with a fisherman, she'd be out on the beach the next day with her own hook and line. She's a wonderful princess sidekick to other princesses.
Friendly, cheerful, and willing to do her share, Alianora can manage herself well once she moves from the default of letting someone else direct her around. She'll probably sell her dress and slippers and buy normal clothes as one of her first moves, since she knows from experience that sensible clothes are best when you're trying to work. (Her dress is probably worth a few month's rent.) She'll hang on to her pearl circlet, but she'll hock it when she has to.
Character Plans:
During the night she will find a good safe place and stay there. During the day she will seek CR. She will not be the kind of person who willingly takes a role in the overall plot, since this is just another case of a princess being kidnapped and someone else will do something. However, slavery will upset her very much. She's likely to involve herself in any abolitionist's movements.
