When you are reading the Bible, there are two forms of inspiration you encounter:
The first is the Inspiration of the Words-- the words that the Biblical Writers are using are Inspired by God--literally God breathed. God chose what should be written--the timeless truths that He wanted to be shared with the world.
The second is the Inspiration of Interpretation--God inspires the reader to understand the truths. What you are reading comes alive in a way that no other piece of literature can--it has the ability to resonate with your spirit, and provide a supernatural insight into the interpretation of Scripture.
What this means is that the Bible never has simply 1 meaning for everything written. The Bible holds truths that can be carried over from generation to generation, and applied in new ways in any time in history.
When we read in Revelation, the Spirit inspires us to understand it in new ways--ways applicable to our lives in this time.... ways the ancient world would not be able to. This doesn't mean they are wrong--it doesn't mean we are wrong--it means that God is able to completely super-cede and transcend time--even while writing the words in time. Amazing!
As you read your Bible, be open to what the Spirit is saying--learn what people have said about it in the past--and listen for what God is saying through it in the moment. You will be amazed at what He will reveal--because His Words will NEVER return void-- for as long as there is an earth, God's words will be true and timeless.
Peace and love.
