i've heard that many of the locals take the train to aeon mall to go see a movie. i didn't understand why. our town has its own mall, complete with a movie theater. why pay over 2000 yen in train tickets, then another 2000 yen for the movie ticket, plus more yen for concessions?
well, i went and saw the green hornet in our humble little movie theater and found out. it was quite a learning experience. first, i learned that the ticket at our little theater costs 1800 yen. nearly $20 for one adult. maybe they charge more for english movies? that's no doubt the full ticket cost (it started at 5:40), which is way too much money. i learned that when you buy a movie ticket, you choose your seat. at time of purchase, you pick where you're gonna sit. i picked the front middle of the theater, without really thinking about how many seats were on the screen. this is so novel, how could i think about what seat i was picking? i purchased my reasonably sized and priced concessions items. a personal sized popcorn and a drink between 20 and 32 oz, both for 500 yen. the drink by itself at an american theater would be $3. even if they still offered such small drinks. i coulda bought me a small cup of dippin dots. i figure i'll buy me some green tea dippin dots some other time.
i learned that our movie theater has all of 6 theaters. well, nothing unusual about that. when i got into my theater, i laughed at the screen. smallest theater screen i've ever seen. this must be why people travel so far to see a movie. all of 70 seats in the theater. 10 seats in each of 7 rows. note to self: row 5 is good.
turned out, i was the only one who wanted to see the green hornet in english, so it was 2300 yen for a private show in a teeny theater. i didn't attempt to keep quiet. there's nobody else to bother. i also moved from my 3rd row seat. nobody's getting displaced, and i'm more comfy.
the movie was good. i enjoyed it. i laughed a lot. but, i think that the brit reed (sp?) character is an idiot. good thing he's surrounded by smart characters.
so there. i've seen a movie in a japanese movie theater.
