I chose scene 2 titled "Chapter One" from the movie Kill Bill vol. 1 for analysis.
The scene begins with the main character Beatrix parking her truck on the street in front of a nice suburban house. Text appears on the screen saying Pasadena, CA. The camera follows Beatrix up the driveway and focuses on children's toys scattered throughout the yard. There is a close up on her finger as she pushed the doorbell. A women (Vernita) answers the door and the camera gets a close up startled reaction shot of her. Next is a close up of Beatrix's eyes, revenge type music and a flashback montage of when Vernita tried to kill her. There is no dialogue, but Beatrix attacks her and they begin fighting in the living room.
set: nice middle/upper class living room, furniture, paintings, decorations and children's toys on the floor
props: knives, fire poker, coffee table/broken glass, frying pan
costumes:
Beatrix--jeans, leather jacket (makes her look tough, but still feminine)
Vernita-- track suit (comfortable, yet stylish outfit for busy mom)
Nikki (Vernita's daughter)--kindergartner with normal play clothes, pigtails, back pack and lunch box
sounds--car parking, doorbell, punches/kicks, choking noises
The women punch and kick each other, flip over tables and book shelves on each other, get a knife and fying pan from the kitchen for weapons. The camera goes back and forth from eye level full view shots to reaction shots of each character after a hit. First line of dialogue is minutes into the scene and Vernita says only "Come on, bitch". They are face to face holding knives out at each other in front of the large front window of the house. It is a beautiful sunny day, and a school bus stops and lets out a little girl. She walks up to the house. There is a close up of Vernita as she sends a pleading look to Beatrix as if to say, "please not in front of my child". The front door opens and the women hide their knives behind their backs. The little girl asks what happened to the living room (far away shot of broken glass and furniture everywhere) and the mom explains the dog made a mess. A normal conversation takes place introducing the girl and Beatrix as an "old friend of mommy's". The little girl goes up to her room. The scene ends with the 2 women looking at each other as if "What now?". Vernita then says "You want some coffee?" and the reply is "Sure".
I love this scene because everything about the setting is so normal and so the women trying to kill each other in the middle of the day is just absurd. My favorite part is when you see the school bus pull up to the house because it reinforces the idea that its not the perfectly orchestrated movie fight scene. Things don't always go as planned. I love how after trying to kill each other, they have coffee to discuss what they're going to do.
