typical comics

As I looked through the list of comics we compiled in class, I began to think about how most of them fit into 2 basic categories-- (1) action fantasy and (2) real life humor.  The action fantasy comics are Spiderman, X-Men and Manga that have heroes and villians with superpowers, damsels in distress, the fight of good vs. evil and strange fantasy environments.  It offers entertainment for both children and adults, by letting our imagination take us away to these fantasy places where we have magic powers and battle dangerous villians knowing that we will triumph.  We live the action of the characters without the danger.  Real life humor comics are Dilbert, Peanuts and Archie that offer situations that the reader can personally identify with.  Dilbert centers around workplace humor that adults that work in an office atmosphere can laugh at--the ironies and ridiculousness of corporate politics.  We laugh and think, well I'm not alone, someone else understands! Peanuts is a cute comic that makes us think back to childhood memories and how the innocent mind of a child sees things so differently.  The 2 categories offer something for whatever mood you're in, whether it's an adventure or a good laugh.  It seems like the real life humor comics work best as a 4 panel strip, like a joke with a punchline at the end.  The aciton fantasy comics seem to work best in book format so they can tell more of the epic story.
