For the challenge redux over at
tvrealm, I chose to do the create a show challenge again!
...I also chose to make it a quasi-superhero animated series because that's just how I roll. (Though I think I'd more label it under a vigilante genre.)
Divided We Fall
In a not-so-far-off future, the United States is in upheaval. Around ten years ago, the people overthrew their government after the most corrupt presidency in the history of the country. We're now in the middle of the revolution, which has yet to resolve itself due to violently opposing views amongst the populace. Foreign countries have attempted to step in, but with one backing one party and the other another, it's only escalated the conflict. The media will occasionally highlight leaders and politicians who claim to have the key to solving the problem, but the media has become a massive source of misinformation without preventative law, and these leaders are frequently assassinated.
The poor and marginalized are terrified. Hostility and blame flourishes in this environment, and making it no longer a safe place for them. Some join the fight. Many bolt their doors and hide. The media portrays them as the main assailants in this fight, further adding to the conflict.
Children of the revolution, the main cast are between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two. They've never known the US without an absolute ruler or anarchy. Tia Reed, our main character, lives with her uncle, a police officer in Boston. (The police force is largely volunteer and thus more like vigilantism than an actual force, as each has their own purpose in mine.) Her parents, having made a home for themselves in a more rural area over the past few years, plan on taking her in when it's safe to travel. Tia, however, isn't interested. Possessing a spirit of bravery instilled in her by her uncle, she instead chooses to become a symbol, fighting crime with her head wrapped in a scarf in order to instill hope in the poor and marginalized.
After the news catches hold of her story, several other young people join the fight and meet up with her, building up our cast into a small team of vigilantes.
Characters
Tia Reed
Voiced by Jasika Nicole
Currently living with her uncle in Boston, Tia becomes the leader of the team as the show progresses. The process is reluctant; although Tia goes out of her way to start fighting the violence against her community, she didn't sign up for risking her identity while doing it. However, once the group made the team official, they made the decision that more than anything else, the community needed a person to look up to, not a symbol. Within the group, it was decided that Tia deserved to be the voice of that uprising. Tia unmasks in the middle of a rally, news outlets reporting the incident live. As the police is in shambles, her opponents are largely unable to identify her, but that becomes increasingly more of a problem as the series progresses.
The process isn't without its problems for the young woman, and she constantly leans on Jamie as her rock. Although Tia is full of fire and passion for change, she never thought she would be sucked into this world so quickly and irrevocably.
Jamie Flores
Voiced by Dante Basco
A young second-generation Filipino man living in Boston, Jamie is a long and close friend of Tia. He often helps her through her struggles and is her rock. He's the one with whom she makes the realization that she needs to step up and help the city, and later in the series, he's the one who suggests that she take off the mask. In the team, he serves as offsite tech -- raised by a mother who was given a full ride to Harvard based on his technical knowledge, a good majority of that education was passed onto Jamie. He stays behind on missions and acts as their eye in the sky, as well as mending and even creating their uniforms. However, that wasn't exactly his first choice.
With both hemophilia and anemia, Jamie is prevented from overexerting himself lest he risk getting hurt or worse. While he's always optimistic and smiling for his friends, when he's forced to stay at home knowing his friends could live or die, he's a nervous wreck for them. That being said, he is an intrinsic part of the team and they would easily fail without him.
Julie Williams
Voiced by Molly C. Quinn
The youngest on the team at eighteen, she also happens to be one of the most trained. Born to a privileged family in Boston, Julie had what one would consider a decently "normal" childhood under the circumstances. She was homeschooled by her parents (as were most children during the time) and brought up with a certain number of extracurriculars, including tae kwon do and archery. Her parents viewed her interest in such vocations as purely entertainment value, but unlike her parents, Julie saw the world for what it was becoming. When she sees Tia on the news one night, she slips out her window one night with one of her favorite crossbows. On her first trip she fatally injures a robber, resulting in Tia pulling her aside to provide her with nonlethal darts.
Julie never quite recovers from her first trip out. On the team, she serves as a sniper, taking out potential threats with a sedative before they can get to the team.
Allie Kane
Voiced by Dana Davis
Adopted into a white family, Allie Kane often struggles with her sense of identity. As a child she lived in the suburbs, a mostly white town that was barely touched by the uprising. It was almost vacuum-sealed: to prevent the chaos from getting in, they prevented a lot of people from getting out. As such, she was white-identified and barely paid much care to the massive levels of equality outside of her bubble. However, as she got older and more aware of the state of the world, her eyes started to open to the anarchy of the country. She started listening to the global radio, which the community tried to prevent with a steady stream of local news. She ended up finding a station with a heavy slant against Tia, and after hearing about her escapades for a few times, she decided to see for herself, taking her parents' car and driving into Boston. The state of affairs stuns her and she leaves her parents behind for a few months to sort things out. She meets Tia purely randomly and confronts her, but ends up realizing she was getting false information and joins her side.
On the team, Allie serves as onsite tech, taken under Jamie's wing and shown what to do and when.
Althea To
Voiced by Lauren Tom
A third-generation Korean transwoman living in Boston with her family, Althea To is currently forced into living as a man around her family. Very religious and strictly traditional, Althea knows full well that if she tells them her true identity, she'll be rejected and probably kicked onto the street. Given the current state of affairs and the dangers of being homeless as well as just being transgender, that's something she can't risk. As such, she's forced to live with extreme dysphoria and struggles to get from day to day. When she hears about Tia from a friend, she sees it as a way to escape her environment and make the world better so she can make her life better. She starts acting as a vigilante and successfully takes on crime for a few weeks until being discovered by Tia and the team.
Althea's activities among the team allow her to be seen and recognized as a woman, and for that, she starts to crave being in costume more often than being out of it.
Graphics
For graphics, I decided to draw character designs for everyone. Tia and Jamie get fullbody spreads because they're two of the more prominent characters in the show -- and they're both in it from the start. (I was originally gonna do everyone in that style, but that got a bit tedious.)
