I started talking to Rob a year ago today on plentyoffish.com.
I had found the site through my friend Ashley because that was where she had met her boyfreind, Rob. That was a year ago before last year (2006) and I hadn't really had any interest from there since I had joined. There was a new feature that was introduced sometime around the time that I found Rob where you could actually see the people who were looking at your profile. I was getting a couple hits a day but no one I was really interested in. Eventually, I told myself that the next attractive guy that looked at my profile, I would send a message to.
A week later on the morning of July 1, 2007, I was on the site because I was procrastinating. I was living at my mom's house for the summer taking a class online. I noticed this absolutely crazy looking dude with long hair on my list of people who had seen my profile. The picture was pretty washed out but I was able to see some dark intense eyes and my first thought was "Wow, he's really cute!" I looked at his profile. The two things that I still remember him listing under his interest were "history" and "seriousness." The history thing was an interest to me because I like history too but I'm one of the least serious people you'll ever meet so that kind of made me a little wary. The other thing that sort of scared me off was the fact that he was 24. I had never dated anyone who was older than me before, especially not four years older.
My other friend, Catie, the one who I went to the wine tasting with, was online so I asked for her advice on what to say and she was really helpful along with someone who was in a chatroom on Facebook. With that, I sent him a hello and told him that I thought he sounded nice and some other stuff that I can't exactly remember at the moment.
He messaged me back in a couple hours. It was a really lengthy message too which impressed me because most of the time guys will write one or two lines that don't really say much. In the first message he seemed really eager to get to know me. He provided me with a phone number and even a potential date idea, a trip to the movies or to the beach. I liked him right away.
Although I wasn't eager to give out my phone number, I did get him my AIM screen name and he said that he didn't have AIM. We messaged each other a couple more times before I got an IM from RobK.
We talked about his job and my education and the fact that I like hookah. He actually went through the trouble of going to my myspace and reading up on me for things to talk about which I thought was sweet. We talked about where I was from and things I found out about on wikipedia (like that Mila Kunis learned English by watching the Price is Right and that Abercrombie was originally a hunting store). By that point, I had figured out that he was harmless and I wasn't afraid he was going to be anyone unsavory. We talked for hours and he charmed me right away. Before I knew it, I gave him my number and I got a phone call a few minutes later.
He very literally had me at "Hey!"
Ironically enough, I was already planning a trip back to Tallahassee that weekend to visit my friend Matt. I told Rob and we made plans to meet that Friday on July 6th for a date.
