To help those Americans out there (*cough* Sarah Palin *cough*) who can only name Roe v. Wade when asked for important Supreme Court decisions, if you are so inclined, post about another important Supreme Court Decision in your journal.
Now... almost everyone is posting about important decisions with which they agree, or at least partially agree. I'm actually going to post one of the ones with which I strongly disagree.
Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537 (1896) - This is the decision which made 'Separate, but Equal' a point of law for a little more than half a century (Until Brown v. The Board of Education, but that would be a different post.) It upheld the constitutionality of segregation in public accomodations, particularly in railways. Even to the point of having state laws which enforced segregation "as long as the accomodations were of equal quality."
One of the important things to remember about the Supreme Court if you live in the United States, and in some ways even if you don't, is that they have not just the power to make things right; they have the power to set into law (until it can be overturned) decisions which can seriously impact all of our lives in negative ways.
