Hyungjun was the first-born of the Kim family. He used to be considered a miracle because his parents did not expect that they would be able to have any children. They were even lucky enough to have a second son a few years later. Hyungjun might have been a child but he still remembers the very first thing Kibum did when he arrived home: making Hyungjun cry by starting to yell each time he was even remotely close to the baby. Hyungjun still felt absolutely blessed to have a little brother, and he understood why his parents were more focused on the little one who needed them more.
He was a simple and curious child who wanted to try everything the world had in stores for him. He was a gifted child who prematurely learned how to read, count, play chess, play the violin and he took piano lessons with his little brother Kibum. He was good at everything as long as he took a while to learn how to do them and that did not have to do those things for too long. He had an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and could not concentrate in school or stay put for more than a few minutes. He followed a very long treatment for it, tedious, long, he wanted to give up. When he was considered ‘normal’, he had a lot of moments where he would overthink about who he was and for reasons he still can't explain as an adult, he felt a lack and drowned himself in his textbooks. Soon enough, his eyes were no good from all that reading and his grades became the only thing he cared about and he would do anything to keep his streak of A+.
The Kim family was praised a lot because of Kibum’s Olympic potential but Hyungjun also has his own achievements to be proud of. He was a chess champion, a certified gold medalist ‘mathlete’, science contest winner, cosplay contest winner, once part of the top 150 Starcraft players in Korea, had a few swimming trophies and has scored a scholarship to enter the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology. He’s even been on a game show and won the big prize! But who cared, Kibum hogged the attention, and Hyungjun was proud of him. He used to want to go for the Summer Olympics in swimming or diving like his father wanted but he had always preferred floating around rather than trying to beat anyone. Then he wanted to be a Jedi Master and then.... he was not sure what he wanted to be anymore. He wouldn't attend swimming practices and being a jedi wasn't a real person job. He questioned himself too much again. All he cared about was his grades again.
Through high school, Hyungjun asked himself a few times why he did not go to parties or drink to experiment like the other kids were. to build a future, he always told himself, but what about right now? His father had died and his mind asked all sorts of questions of the same nature of those that made him isolate himself as a child, only tenfold. It was not until he entered college that he understood that he had been making the right choices. He had enrolled into KAIST and everything was way harder than what he had imagined and he finally felt challenged. These was his Olympics, his finish lines. They were the best years of his life, where he finally felt like he really belonged. In 2009, after 4 years of school, license exams and a tedious internship, he was working for Google. Here was his gold medal.
After a little more than 2 years with Google, he decided that although he was happy and making mama proud, he wanted more and wanted a new challenge, one that he had been thinking about since his childhood. Become a Doctor. He applied to colleges again to pursue a Doctorate Degree and he did not expect the acceptance letter to be from this school and not from his Alma Mater. Nevertheless, he was overjoyed to know he could go back to living closer to his mother and pursue his goal while caring for her.
Yonsei University, here comes a new challenger!

To put it simply, Hyungjun is a mostly a child who never grew up completely. He is bouncy, slightly ADD and 4D, slightly immature, whiny, kind of obnoxious, full of energy and almost always with a ^____^ face on. He is also easily influenced and playing with his feelings is easier than tic tac toe. He talks a lot and can't keep a secret for his life. He cries easily and laughs at the most insignificant things and can get wide eyed at just about everything. He rarely knows middles: He is either extremely happy or terribly sad. He has been depressed a lot because of rejection in the past and it still makes him feel sad but he learned to trade tears for smiles.
Hyungjun is brilliant. He is smart enough to know he is, he thinks he is lucky to be smart enough to understand but still innocent enough to not get why he shouldn't understand. The world would make one bite out of him with its cruelty.
Even in high school, he mainly hung out with college student who are all older than him and he is quite the mama’s boy so he is used to being babied and acting like a maknae but he does it even at school at times. That is why his brother is mistaken as the older brother all the time. He has his moments when he can take his hyung role seriously, if someone needs him or when Kibum is in his moments of pressure break. He is always the first one to get up and lend a helping hand or a shoulder to cry on.
People don’t really come close to him because he looks like your typical shy nerd/geek but it doesn’t matter, he comes to people and shows his outgoing side very easily. It’s up to people to judge him as annoying or friendly. He plays MMORPGs, laughs at Internet memes, repairs electronics, knows his way with a computer like the way to his room and attends Sci-Fi conventions dressed as Captain Kirk (he begs Kibum to come with him as Mr. Spock.) He's that fat guy in the Simpsons, only not fat a stereotypical nerd.
Unlike what some would think, he doesn’t see his brother as a rival and always takes the first row seat to cheer on his ice champion of a brother even if Kibum likes to beat on him (Hyungjun thinks that how he shows love.) He even followed him to America, Australia, Japan and wherever Kibum needs to go. He is really proud of how accomplished and mature Kibum is but he wished his younger brother’s bossy ‘leadership’ did not make him feel like the younger brother.
All in all, Hyungjun is an open book!
