Quebec City

The French: We will not speak with you, except though the mouths of ze cannons and ze guns!
The British: Fine with us Frenchies! *BOOM*

And that's how the Brits took over Quebec from the French.

An old tank from World War 2 ^

Stationed in Quebec is the Royal 22e Régiment - the only francophone Canadian regiment of the Canadian army. This goat is their mascot. What's the deal with goats as mascots?

"Are you my mummy?"

World War 2 supplies ^

You can see the difference in the British (on the left) vs French (on the right) architecture in this photo above.

Lots of things from wars left around ^

The Saint Lawrence River ^

*boom*

With some other tourists looking at the river ^

Some big thing for telling the time of day... or shooting down alien spaceships ^

Garden display of the symbol of the regiment 22 ^

Our tour guide pointing out the governor general's place ^

The big canon is named Rachael ^

Another view of the river ^

View of the city from the hill on the Citadelle ^

"dis is where we put ze prisoneurs!!!"

Military stuff from regiment 22 ^

Inside the Citadelle of Quebec ^

Chapel ^

The motto of Quebec is "je me souviens". That is, "I remember" in English.

Inside the Citadelle of Quebec ^

Note the grass on the roof of the Citadelle... c'est pour le camouflage!! ^

And that was all the photos I took of the Citadelle of Quebec. If you're curious to know more about it, then here is the Wikipedia link, but if that's too long, here's the gist of it: The Brits come to Quebec, they kick out the French, then they build a big citadelle to defend Quebec from invaders because they're afraid the United States will invade Quebec. However, the US doesn't invade Quebec. It invades Toronto instead. Heh.

And now some photos from the rest of Quebec City:

On the road of the Grande Allée‎. Or "big walk" ^

Lots of buildings like this around Quebec City. Pretty architecture.

Some arty thingie ^

One of the many gates that enter into the old city in Quebec ^

Place d'Youville ^

Another gate ^

Gate name sign ^

Lots of restaurants down this street ^

The street my hotel was on ^

Did I mention that there's a lot of steep hills in Quebec?

Statues... or quantum locked creatures that can only move when they're not being observed.

The Château Frontenac ^
A very big and historic hotel in Quebec City.

Down at the river pier ^

The dog's wearing sunglasses ^

Another photo of the Château Frontenac ^

More steep streets ^

Alleyways full of shops and restaurants. Reminds me of The Rocks in Sydney ^

Curiously named clothes ^

Some art exhibition. Barbie with some creature's skull for her head ^

More old buildings in Quebec ^

Creepy street side painting ^

The city at night ^

So apparently this is what Dante looked like ^

And not this ^

Exploring in the grassed castle walls that enclose old quebec ^

Be careful of people falling? ^

No one seems concerned that there's lots of canons all around the city. Hopefully they're not loaded ^

Quebec was an interesting place. My French that I learnt at uni did not adequately prepare me for this place. I've forgotten a lot of it though. Regular study and use since uni would've helped. I certainly struggled to communicate in Quebec. I think next time I go some francophone place, it'll actually be France.

canada, quebec, french
