It's hard out there for a feminist.

I found a new, interesting person over at ed_recovery and I was looking through her entries. She had posted a video about a book called Female Chauvinist Pigs, and it was a good watch. That book is now on my to-read list. I decided to look up some other feminist videos on youtube, and basically there are very few. Any actual ones have tons of comments on them ( Read more... )

It baffles me when people say, "I'm not a feminist BUT....I do believe in equality for both genders..."

Okay, yeah. Yet, you're not a feminist. Okay.

Because feminism = shaving armpit hair, being a lesbian, and burning bras.

It just pisses me off how negatively feminists are portrayed. Yes, I know I am fat and unattractive. That doesn't mean that is synonymous with being a feminist, though. And though I am bisexual, I don't hate men. I hate male privilege. I have some very wonderful and caring male friends. It's just disgusting how much backlash and negativity there is on youtube. I suppose I should expect it on there, though. =/

Don't read the comments on anything feminist or pornography related. Some of the comments range from ignorant to idiotic to downright hostile.

Examples I've seen....(that were directed to ME):

"If you're going to draw a parallel between rape and porn, you might as well say homocide movies cause murder."

"Feminists don't want to stop until they are BETTER than men. Look at them, some of them have a lot of opportunities, but still won't shut up."

"We all have addictions. You're addicted to water and air, and some people are addicted to porn." <-- IDIOT.

Feminists are definitely not all male-hating. I hate some men in my life, but I also hate some women. I love my fiancee, and I'm not bi-sexual. I'm a petite, Asian girl and am fairly confident about my looks. It's not because I'm some scorned and rejected female that I chose to 'empower' myself by hating on other men.

Yeah... I think it's probably better for my sanity if I pretend youtube comments don't exist. Not all people have addictions. But yes, porn is an addiction. And I agree with you that porn, especially rape porn, leads to or encourages rape. I think the most ridiculous thing I ever heard was the excuse that the reason 90% of people raped or sexually assaulted are women is because "a woman can't really rape a man, and most men are heterosexual, so therefore they will rape women ( ... )

Feminism is the belief that women are people.

Precisely!

I find that most men who decent against this either:
A) are clinging to stereotypes
B) don't understand what feminism is
C) think they won't get laid if they have to treat women as equals
