What I think we really need in the way of tolerance is not smiling affirmation at our differences, but blank-faced indifference. A sense of "Oh, you're this? and that? Okay, then." That's the best we can hope for, I think - and it seems pretty good to me. The differences should only be noted so that necessary adjustments can be made and help given (my being deaf is a good example here) and once the adjustments are made and the help given, they're ignored.
This wouldn't apply to flagrant public displays of... well, idiocy. (Sex in public is the quickest example I can think of.)
Just... well, you know? We could all stand to be a bit blasé, if you ask me.
