So here's the update on the whole accident/cars/insurance/health situation.
Alun did go to see a doctor, who ordered a test to make sure there weren't any signs of seizure, but we ended up canceling that when we found out the auto insurance was actually only interested in *maybe* reimbursing us *later* for medical expenses *if* there turned out to be something wrong that would save them money. But he's still doing and feeling perfectly fine, and we're pretty darn sure it wasn't a seizure, so for now we're just not going to worry about that part.
Also insurance-wise, it's looking like our coverage will be enough for all of the damages to the other cars, thankfully (we were really worried about that BMW...). And! Best news yet! The Jeep does not appear to be totaled and we may even be able to get it back up and running for only about $200.
I cannot express how happy that makes both of us (but especially Alun, who really loves his Jeep).
And on the grad-school front, I finally emailed Berkeley today to find out how things are going as far as them getting me funding. They still don't have money for me for sure, but on top of the excellent chance I already had of someone with a funding offer deciding to go somewhere else, the department is currently petitioning the dean to get more fellowship funding. They're waiting to hear back on that, but if the petition is granted, then I will definitely have the money.
So while it is kind of frustrating not knowing yet, she acknowledged how hard it is waiting for this kind of news and promised to get me information as soon as possible. Unless everything on their end crashes and burns spectacularly (i.e. they fail at giving me a fellowship), the plan is still Berkeley. And really, I'm pretty excited about the idea of being somewhere new.
