Summary: Cagalli and Athrun have already been reunited, and Lacus muses on her predictable relationship with Kira as she waits for him to return from a reconnaissance mission, only to be caught by a surprise present from the couple.

Sitting in the launching bay as she had hundreds of times before, the pink princess looked out, impatiently watching, waiting for Kira to return. He’d gone out on a reconnaissance mission this time, but still, she couldn’t help but worry, wanting to be sure that he’d return safely.

As always, she waited for him, worrying but confident that he would manage to take care of himself. His missions often ended in just this way: he would come back, perhaps with barely a scratch or two, if at all, knowing she would be there waiting for him. He’d come over to her, before or after he’d gotten out of his flight suit, hug her, and tell her how things went. And, as always, she would hug him back, and sit and listen.

The pattern of events left her content, filled with a relaxed form of happiness at knowing how well they worked with each other, and how often they needed no words at all to communicate their feelings. Everything went as it always had, and they established an unconscious routine, never planned but always expected.
There were times when she’d wanted more, or wished things were different. Perhaps a little more unpredictable? Romantic? But if anything, this songstress was a practical person, and in times like these, there were no moments to spare for romance. She knew that he’d be there, and she’d decided long ago that she would always stay by his side, if ever he needed support, strength, love, anything. He knew that, as well as she knew that she could count on him, to take care of her, protect her, and try to make her happy.
As things were, there was never a need to rush. Never a need for surprises, extravagant gestures, or anything of the sort. As long as they were happy together, they would stay together, it was as simple as that.

Still, there were moments when she’d surprise him, moments like just before the terrible battle at Jachin Due, when she was so worried about him risking his life that she’d given him her ring. Moments like that between them were rare, but ever so precious to her.

So she couldn’t help feeling a little nostalgic, as Kira read Cagalli’s letter and examined the ring Athrun had given her. Around her, Athrun hadn’t been as openly passionate as with Cagalli, more relaxed around herself now that she was only his friend rather than his fiancée. She was happy for them. Kira was happy that his sister and best friend were happily in love, and Lacus was content to meet new friends.
At times, Athrun and Cagalli would get into fights or misunderstandings, and in those times, often they came to Lacus for words of comfort and advice, which she happily gave. Inside herself, though their relationship seemed more active, she was thankful that hers was calmer, more predictable, peaceful and happy. In all the years she’d known Kira, not once had they argued. They could talk about anything, or nothing at all, and still savor each other’s company.
Sometimes though, inside herself, she knew there were moments when she wished he’d be as impulsive as Athrun and Cagalli tended to be with each other. She wished he’d pick her up, out of the blue, twirl her around and kiss her for no reason at all. Or perhaps hug her, whisper sweet words and tell her how much he loved her, regardless of how many people were watching.
Was there something about her, perhaps, that made people more demure around her? She had been told many times that her presence calmed and soothed, but perhaps, was she dull?

After thinking about it for what she deemed to be too long, she realized there was no sense in her thoughts, if she was perfectly happy with what she had. She loved Kira more than anything, and she cherished all the moments they’d shared. So she would gladly continue to stand by his side, supporting him, and waiting until the time came when he chose to show his affection, and then she would receive it with open arms.

At hearing that Kira had completed the mission successfully, she headed to the window overlooking the launching bay, eager to see him again. Her nerves were soothed now that she saw him returning to the ship, but still, she wouldn’t be completely sure he was okay until she saw him again, face to face.
Thus she found it most distressing when Cagalli burst into the room, distracting her and attempting to coax her away from the window.
“Come quickly Lacus, I have something to show you, I just picked it up, Kisaka helped me actually! It’s a present for you, and I’m sure you’ll like it. But you have to come now, you should see it!”
“But, Kira, I-“
“-It’s fine! He’s back now, I spoke to him and he’s perfectly okay. So come on! He can meet us later!”
“Well…”
“Oh trust me! I’m sure you’ll like it when you see it! You can put it on for Kira, I’m sure he’ll love it!”
Glancing back at the window, she saw the cockpit of the gundam open. Kira had left to head back inside the ship. Everything appeared to be all right, so she should probably go with Cagalli. He’d probably encourage her to, and from the sounds of it, everything was fine. Still…
“I told Kira to come join us later, don’t worry. Come on, there’s no need to worry any more.”
With a gentle smile, Cagalli took Lacus’ hand and guided her towards the door. Still slightly resistant, she weighed going or waiting until Athrun came into the room. He gave her the smile he often directed at Kira, a smile of caring and understanding, before grinning and joining in Cagalli’s attempt to coerce her from the room. Taking a deep breath, Lacus reluctantly let herself be led away from the window as she followed them both back out through the hallways and towards the room she occupied.
They caused quite a commotion in the hallways as Cagalli dragged Lacus along, muttering excitedly about the surprise she’d prepared while Athrun followed behind. Lacus tried to ask Athrun if he’d heard anything about Kira’s return, but he just smiled and evaded her questions. On the way, Cagalli stopped by in her room to pick up a rather large package and then continued on down the hall to Lacus’ room.
Once finally inside, Cagalli deposited the package on her bed, and, holding her hands out ceremoniously, she made way for Lacus to walk up beside her and gestured for her to open it.
A little wary, but thanking them both, she untied the string and unwrapped the package carefully, surprised at the sky blue fabric that tumbled out to greet her. Holding the garment up to the light, she saw that it was a beautiful dress, in soft blue silk lined with white lace and ribbon. Fitted around the waist and then billowing out towards the bottom, all the way down to the floor, it looked exquisite. Overwhelmed, she couldn’t thank them enough.
“You didn’t have to do this for me, but thank you. Thank you very much, it’s beautiful…”
“Oh it was nothing. We just saw it in a shop, and we thought it would look perfect on you! Quickly, put it on! I’m sure Kira will love to see you in it!”
Once again reminded of her desire to see him, she acquiesced and decided to try it on, eager to go to him as soon as she’d finished modeling their gift to her. Athrun, exchanging a wink with Cagalli just moments before, excused himself as Lacus headed to the bathroom to change, claiming that he had something to take care of and would be back soon. Cagalli merely grinned more and pushed Lacus towards the bathroom, telling her that she wanted her to change as fast as she could, and pushing a hairbrush and blue ribbon into her hands.
Once Lacus was safely ensconced in the bathroom and getting ready, she was met every few minutes with Cagalli’s impatient calls, causing her to rush and fling her discarded clothes into the corner of the room.
“Are you done yet?”
“Almost! Just a moment.”
Pulling her hair into a messy ponytail then brushing it through until it straightened out and looked presentable, she wrapped the ribbon around it as she made the final adjustments to her dress, surprised that Cagalli had fallen silent. Perhaps she had grown tired of waiting?
“I’m ready,” she finally called, but was received with silence.
A little nervous, she appraised herself in the mirror, straightening her hair, before stepping back out into her room. A little off balance, she was surprised to be greeted by a dark, empty room. Athrun and Cagalli had made themselves scarce, not even bothering to wait for her to finish so they could see her before dashing off elsewhere. Perhaps they went to see Kira?
“Hello?”
After turning a light on so she could see better, she glanced around the room, noticing nothing out of place, then decided she should probably go look for them. Worry caused her to decide to head towards Kira’s room first, so without even bothering to change back, she tidied up the package wrapping and then headed to the door.
Upon opening it however, she was greeted with the most unexpected thing she’d ever seen: Kira stood at the entrance to her room, bouquet of pink roses in hand, clothed in a tux that made him look very handsome, with the kindest, most loving smile she’d ever seen on his face.
In awe, Lacus stood there for several minutes, staring at him as he looked over her and made his way into her room, the door falling shut behind him. Holding the flowers out to her when he approached, his eyes never left hers as he spoke:
“I’m back.”
Slowly regaining her voice as she attempted to convince herself that all of this was indeed real, though she was beginning to wonder if he’d been hit on the head during his mission, she replied:
“Welcome back.”
“Lacus, you look…. beautiful…” and raising a hand to the side of her face, he delicately stroked her reddening cheeks, his eyes still gazing lovingly into hers.
“I have something for you. I wanted you to know--no…. I want you to know, that I love you. I love you more than anything.”
With that, their foreheads a breadth away from one another, he reached into his pocket, pulling out a small box, and holding it up to her before opening it slowly. Unwillingly, she broke his gaze as she glanced down, the lid moving away to reveal, nestled in the tiny box, a slim, sparkling silver ring with a small pink jewel crowning the top of it.
“Lacus Clyne, the woman I love with all of my heart, will you marry me?”
And once again, she found that she’d lost her voice. Slowly, her hand rose up to the box, her fingers reaching for the ring, yet not daring to touch it. Her eyes misted as she looked up at him, and at seeing the ever-familiar warmth in his eyes, reassuring her and explaining when words could not how much he felt for her. He stood confident at her side, stroking her face once more.
“Kira… I….”
And suddenly overcome with emotion, her hand rose to cover her mouth as she attempted to blink the tears away, calming as Kira brushed them away gently and kissed her softly on her forehead. Smiling up confidently at him, she gave him her reply.
“Yes.”
No sooner had she uttered that one statement did Kira discard the ring and its box onto the bed, capturing Lacus’ lips in a kiss and twirling her around, holding her close. Embracing her over and over, his arms remained snug around her waist, not wanting to let her go as he smiled down at her, happier than he’d ever looked before.

After many eager hugs and drawn-out kisses, they looked up at each other, both grinning, and Kira picked the ring out of the box, kneeling on the ground and holding Lacus’ hand gently in his. Raising the ring to her finger, he kissed her hand before slipping it on, glancing up at her possessively and happily before bringing her close again.
“I guess I’d better go let them know the mission was successful, shouldn’t I?”
“Oh! How did the one you went on today go?”
Staring at her meaningfully, he exclaimed:
“Better than any before. I’m happy to say it was a great success,” he gestured to her ring, “looks like it fits just fine. I’m a wealthier man now than anyone in the world.”
