Last night was the intro meeting for Wilderness heals. I got to talk to some of the hike leaders, and some first time hikers from last year as well as some experienced Hikers, I also got to hear more about the Stone House and what it does as well as from one of the residence there.
The things I learned about the hike were great and has encouraged me even more and eased some of my fears.
The things I learned about the Stone House however were phenomenal.
http://www.elizabethstonehouse.org/ They do so much more then I realize. This is an organization that focuses on women, offering alternative mental health care, over institutionalization, Shelter for victims of domestic violence as well as transitional housing. They do not tell these women what they need to do, they ask them their goals, they encourage them to achieve them and help them to reach those goals. They teach them how to be strong again, they get them the help they need, the provide transportation to meeting, grocery stores, they get them educations, skill training sets, the protect them and show them that they can live life again, and that they can be strong.
And the women who go there for help are just as amazing as the organization themselves, listening to them tell their stories about what they have been through and were able to get away from and how far they have grown because of the Stone House. I was completely over whelmed.
The Elizabeth Stone house came into being in 1974, they have existed helping women for as long as I have been alive, they do not believe in locking a woman away and taking her children from her because she needs help, they believe in support the family unit and getting them all help.
Wilderness Heals
http://www.elizabethstonehouse.org/wilderness-heals/index.html is a 3 day hike to raise support and awareness for the Stone house and issues it fights against. It has been going on for 13 years. I am impressed by the women who have done this Hike over those years and more impressed by the women who have sought the Stone house for support and shelter who have taken on the challenge as well. I am proud that this year I will be one of the women Hiking along side of them to help raise these funds.
I encourage you to look over the sites and read about all the work they do. I also encourage you to support the Hike this year. You can do so at
http://www.elizabethstonehouse.org/wilderness-heals/sponsor-support.html or contact me and I will get you off line support information. Please list my name Linda Ballance as the Hiker you are supporting.
Just think if everyone who reads this donates 25 dollars (just 25) then I will have raised the $1200.00 I need to for this Hike and that money will go to this wonderful cause.
