Hi! One thing to know about me is that right now I'm trying to do a proper job of catching up on my friendslist's journals . . . backwards. If I make a few late comments on your entries in the next few hours, that will be why. >>;
An actual piece of trivia is that I'm a huge fan of musical theater, specifically the music component; in the past year especially I've been listening to a bunch of soundtracks. I love the (sadly rare!) feeling that comes from listening to a song which manages to be perfectly, vibrantly dramatic in context--used right, it's more powerful than words can ever be. I feel. *_* (But at the same time, I'm really selective, so most of what I end up listening to is Sondheim . . . .)
Hello, sweetheart! Welcome back--and goodness, good luck with that! It can be quite an undertaking. ^^
Really? That's amazing--me, too! *laugh* (Though I'm not nearly as selective, I suspect.) Ironically, I used to see a lot more musical theatre back when I was in high school in the Philippines.
One song I particularly like (though I am rather biased, as I sang the female part in college for a concert and had a tenor with a showstopping voice as my partner) is "Forever Yours," from Once On This Island. It goes from being a gorgeous love duet to being rather, well, terrifying, actually. If you haven't heard it, I'll send it to you. ^^
And seriously? That's great! I can count my musical theater-inclined friends on one hand (at least, I think--I haven't really surveyed my friendslist lately); it's always wonderful to find more.
And I haven't heard that one! I'd love to sample it, if you don't mind.
Indeed! I'll send it to you the next time I'm at my da's place, since he has better Internet. I think the quality of the female lead's voice is a bit shrill, but I find the song itself is lovely and creepy. ^^
Funny that you like Sondheim--my group in college used to sing a lot of that. *laugh* Yeah, musical theatre doesn't appeal to everyone--it IS really campy!--but I feel that that's part of the pleasure of it. ^^
And ah, camp. ::grin:: It's definitely something I enjoy about a lot of musicals. (Certainly the Prince of Tennis ones!) Although, I want to believe the medium itself isn't necessarily restricted to camp--I feel like the best shows can be intense enough to rival a serious movie, in their own way. Then again, that could just be me wanting to justify how much I like them. ^^;
*laugh* Oh, I agree! The best shows certainly can be intense enough to rival a serious movie... but I think you have to be in a certain mindset to think that way. A lot of people consider the suspension-of-reality necessary to accept the characters singing and dancing to be a bit too much for credibility. Especially the dancing. *laugh*
One way the musical theatre genre was both made fun of and treated in a wonderfully grown-up way was in the Buffy musical episode--I'd recommend watching it, if you haven't. Most of them sing surprisingly well, and it managed to be both hilarious and sobering at the same time.
And of course, you're completely right. (Aw, but the dancing!)
I've actually heard a lot about the Buffy musical episode, although I've never seen it. You've given me just the incentive I needed to look it up, though, so thanks! My curiosity will finally be sated.
