Porphyry, Steven Universe
Porphyry is a pretty new character, which is why I'm writing about her tonight, because I should get to bed soon. But am still worked up. She's a rebellion era Crystal Gem, one of the many and many who didn't survive the war. One of the ideas I have on the back burner that I really really would love to write is backstory fic with slow burn Ruby/Sapphire and for that I need a cast. ...a cast of guppies. ...sometimes I really feel a certain bond with CJ Cherryh. Anyway.
Porphyry is a civil engineer and an architect. She was relatively high ranking when she defected to the Crystal Gems and Rose Quartz - the equivalent of a major. She has a lot of experience throwing up and fortifying buildings, trenches, embankments, bridges, and other such. Plonk her in an unfamiliar gem built building, and she'll be able to find anywhere she wants to go after a short bout of exploring to figure out its purpose. She can organize people to get a complicated task done without it being necessary for them to have a lot of technical expertise, and she prides herself on doing excellent work with the minimum of necessary resources.
She's also very good at growing non-sapient crystals for construction and technical purposes. It actually used to be her hobby - the way some people grow elaborate kitchen gardens or build ham radios. Then it turned deadly earnest when she defected. Luckily, that set of skills is one she has a lot of takers for when it comes to teaching and sharing knowledge. (Rose Quartz encourages everyone to learn from each other as much they can. Porphyry is a big fan of this part of the rebellion. She loves to learn new things. While she's very practical, she has a hunger for 'useless' knowledge, and for other people's perspectives.)
I think, although I'm not sure, that she may report to Pearl. (I haven't clarified my thoughts on how the rebellion is organized at this point.)
Even before she defected, her designs were displaying some human influence, because she doesn't believe in reinventing wheels, and some of the solutions for the unique challenges of Earth's wet, mildly acidic, extremely full of plants that are extremely good at breaking things, environment were sitting right there in human architecture and practice. She'd be a fool not to take note, is what she said to the gem who eventually recruited her for Rose Quartz. And while Porphyry can take failure with grace, and admits to ignorance with genuine humility and curiosity - - - she can't bear to be a fool, can't bear not to take every chance she can to learn and change and grow and make her work and her mind better.
And besides, she'd regret it, if there were no more at all of these strange, peculiar, organic sapients that build such beautiful irrigation systems, and laugh at her when she doesn't understand their gods.
