OC October: Nashak, Vahbiz, and Farida

Oct 10, 2015 20:59

Okay, I've seen people doing OC October - especially
ilyena_sylph and so far I've completely failed to comment even though I've really enjoyed everyone's write ups! sooo cooooooooool! But it looks so fun and I want to join in! so even though I'm late, and I don't know if I can catch back up or anything, I'm just going to jump in and go ahead.

1) Nashak, Vahbiz, and Farida - Fullmetal Alchemist

Nashak, Vahbiz, and Farida are three of the pre/early teenage Ishvalan kids in the shantytown/settlement in which Deposition takes place. Nashak and Farida's story are part of that story, Vahbiz's didn't make it in for reasons that are entirely about me and not the world of the story.

(Basically, I didn't have a lot of time. I wrote that fic to a deadline, I started late, it was extremely ambitious and I was running right up to the last moment to submit. I didn't have time to write or find a place for a scene about Mahodkht interviewing Vahbiz. Which is a shame, because she and Nashak are darn near inseparable, so her story would have echoed a lot of the events of his, and it'd be interesting to have the difference in what she found important to tell and how she remembered it.)

Nashak and Vahbiz are siblings - they're orphans, their parents and baby brother didn't make it out, they're living with Teacher Pulad, a monk who was - sort of an abbot before the war? And is now acting in a less formal capacity for the community where he's fetched up during the main timeline of FmA - with three years between them. Vahbiz is younger, and Nashak was brought up always being told 'look after your sister', 'take care of your sister', 'you and your sister should always be good to each other,' which he took very seriously and - may kind of take beyond seriously into a mildly paranoid (because it isn't very paranoid if they really are after you), trauma inflected degree now that they're the sole survivors of their family. Vahbiz has very strong feelings about Nashak, and is very close to him, but doesn't cling to him quite as much as he often clings to her.

Farida is friends with both of them - kind of by default, there aren't a whole ton of children their age in the encampment, so the few there are stick together, but also by choice. She likes them. Vahbiz and Nashak are both very outgoing and very social. They like to make connections and impress people and show off and draw people in. (Their parents and other immediate family were shopkeepers and they used to spend a lot of time in the storefront helping out. Some things haven't been wiped out by the experience of the genocide.)

Farida, on the other hand, while she's not exactly shy, is deeply reserved and quiet. Much more devout than her friends (not that they're not devout, Farida is just very deeply spiritual) and much more given to stillness and steadiness, to waiting and thinking and maintaining a steady pace, she's been marked by several of the adults as a good candidate for the clergy, if she expresses an interest/conviction/calling that way when she's a little older (she's fourteen in the canon timeline, which is a little young for her community).

Farida has living family - her aunt (her mother's sister) and her mother. Her mother's a baker and used to run her own business. I'm not sure about the aunt? I think she may have been a bookkeeper. Not a bookie, y'know, a clerk. They both catch whatever work they can with limited references and credentials and eternal problem of possible blackmail these days. Farida is really proud of her mother's skill and wants to learn more of her skill than she has herself.

(Though she has herself thought about becoming a monk and kind of - struggled with it and prayed it over not because she's conflicted about whether or not she wants to, she does want to, but she's a very observant and thoughtful person, and she knows perfectly well that that is an enormous amount of responsibility in the present situation and she's afraid of trying to take it on and failing and hurting people.)

So that's the Ishvalan kid trio. So far they're only in the one fic, and Vahbiz technically never appears on screen, but if I ever get around to writing more in my post canon Ishval setting, they will probably reappear more, and Pulad and Farida's aunt and mother with them.
