Oh, WOW.
That was, without a doubt, one of the cooler afternoons I’ve had. Omigosh omigosh. WONDERFUL lecture on Conrad, imperialism, and Conrad’s own racism and simultaneous anti-colonialism and pro-imperialism.
I loved it. I had so much fun. There were large segments on racist rhetoric in modern movies, and the guest speaker was lovely and funny and so through, and I have a really revolting propagandistic/racist phrase from Time to show, and ooooh. :) I also got to quote John Quincy Adams (or, more accurately, paraphrase him), which is why the icon with him snarking at the South Carolina contingent is on this post, and wheee! Also mentioned William Wordsworth. Struggling with depression all your life does not mean you have to end up convinced that all people are evil and the world is no good, as my favorite dorky romanticist optimist/workaholic (with the troublesome racial understandings, yes) proves.

Also told guest speaker about Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes story in which he (ACD, not Holmes) denounces racism, and she mistook me for a Grad student.
I’m very, very flattered. :) Especially as she told me I knew an awful lot.
