Emigrant Whales and Assorted other oddities

...I think the heat killed my day off energy. I was so hyper just a short time ago. Now I've gone flop. Silly me.

I'm afraid I haven't got anything interesting to say, really. Life on our planet continues to consist of mayhem, murder, explosions, and flashes of divine beauty, and that's the way it has been and will be for a very long time.

Oh! Wait! I did read something very interesting today. A couple of conservationists think it would be a good idea to airlift grey whales not needed to maintain a stable population off the coast of California and deposit them off the coast of the UK, where they've been extinct for about four hundred years.

...I. There are so many jokes I could make here. I'm not sure where to start. Setting aside all the practical problems of whale airlifts, there are just so many - Would they need passports, do you think? Would California get international props for giving up some of its great friendlies? Would there be ceremonies? Would this be like the whole sister cities thing? Sister coastlines? I just -

Yes. Immigrant whales. It's a thought that tickles me pink.

I continue to struggle with my later than I even want to think about, and boy have I been rude when it comes to failing to explain that, Bracathon fic. I think I was overconfident. However, I believe I have finally found a PoV that will let me finish it. I hope I have. Argh. And this time I really, really, really mean it when I say: Never Again. Never. Again. Ever. At all. Not happening. No more ficathons. I'm not going to get better at them, and the only one I ever managed to finish on deadline... Well, that was two years ago, and I think I've gotten a review for the damned thing. Ergh. It would seem that no one shares my belief that there needs to be more ghost!Kotori/Kaumi fic in the world. *coughs*

Let's see... Things I've thought about and ended up not blogging about... O'Connor retiring makes me very sad. I like that lady. She has buckets and buckets of class. And it's so nice to have a... how was it I once saw it put? A persuadable mind. She has a persuadable mind, and it's so nice to have someone with one of those around. I am really, really, really going to miss her. I cried when I read the news. AGH! Why did it have to be my favorite who stepped down first! But really, she's earned a break, so...

Ahem. I'm a member of the United Church of Christ, as most of you know by now. :D And, well, guess what the general synod got up to on July Fourth? For those of you who haven't heard yet, on the fourth the synod voted on a resolution concerning gay marriage. It passed. The general synod, at least, now publicly affirms that marriage should be open to all who seek it, and that, frankly, the gender of the participants is not the government's business.

Of course, this doesn't mean that every congregation in the country will feel the same way, and choose to adopt the resolution for themselves, but given the mood of my church the next Sunday, I'd be willing to bet we will. :D

*delights*

...Everything else is sordid as usual. However, it rained here yesterday, thank heaven. For several hours. And it's been showering off and on today. I'm hoping this means the drought is finally breaking. *crosses fingers* It's just been awful, it really has. The heat and dry and the - Gaaaaah. It's been getting to me. I get antsy if too long a time passes without rain.

In other news, I have not read the new Harry Potter book yet. And will not be for a bit. Look, the brothers got to it first, okay? Instead, I've been reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and am throughly happy with it. I'm not all that far in - only about a quarter, as it's a huge book - but I'm enjoying the heck out of it. The Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair scares me, and Mr Norrell is dear in a crabby, egotistical sort of way, and Mr Strange is grand and silly and dorky and love, and I adore Arabella, who rocks, and Mr Segundus, who is a geeky delight, and Vinculus is - is - *bounces* I like him, though I don't know how to say why.

...I think I shall put a hold on season five of Babylon 5 while I'm here, so I can finally get my hands on that sucker. Woot! *does the dance of finally getting to see the last act of the tragedy*

The POSTCARD OFFER is still open. I shall even brave the terrors of international mail. It's only postcards, after all. They can't possibly want me to fill out customs forms with big official warnings on them for postcards, right? Right?

*wibbles*

*snaps out of it and goes off to take care of Library business and call brother for a pick up*

b5, whales, gay marriage, real life, politics, ucc, nature, strange and norrell, postcards
