Tia stopped as she walked into the room, letting the post she was holding drop with a slap onto the table at her side. "Damnit." The plant had died, bloody well died while she'd been out ( Read more... )

"Does this call for a funeral?" Daniel tried his best to hide the amused smile as he looked at the dead plant, though he didn't do a very good job of it. He'd let himself into Tia's flat without announcement, hoping to surprise her instead. Now he was leaning against the door frame, his arms crossed against his chest casually as the smile finally broke free across his lips. It wasn't that he was amused at the dead plant, how devastating! No. He was more amused by Tia's reaction. It was just so... cute, the way she cursed like that.

"Or," He cleared his throat, pushing off the door frame to straighten up, "The equivalent of a funeral for a plant? You'd have to tell me what the protocol is for this sort of thing, I've never had any of my own plants before."

Daniel's smile quickly turned into more of a smirk at this, as having a plant was the last thing he wanted to do right now. Or ever, for that matter. No, no. He'd leave that sort of thing to Tia, thanks. Live vicariously through her, or something equally as lame that gave him a decent enough excuse for him to feel okay with never having to deal with them.

Teasing further, he added, "Does it have a name?"

Tia spun back around at the unexpected sound of an always welcome voice and broke into a smile. "Daniel!" Never mind the teasing, she hardly paid attention to the words because her friend was here! Tia rushed over and threw her arms around his neck in a hug as he straightened. Good thing she wasn't one hundred percent paying attention too, because she just might have offered to fix his lack of houseplant problem if she'd caught that. She was glad he was here. For the moment at least, it took her mind off the disappointment of having killed a sickly plant.

She drew back in time to catch the smirk and continued smiling, though she smacked him lightly with the back of a hand. "No we're not having a funeral for it. It's not even mine. It's a client's." As for whether or not it had a name, "They didn't say."

Ah, damn. He didn't scare her, did he? Not that he was intentionally trying to. No, that wasn't exactly the reason he'd come over without giving her warning. That wasn't why he sneaked in so quietly... it was just that, if he had caught her unaware and if she had jumped or let out a scream or something... well, it would have been a bit priceless and he'd have reason to laugh and tease her mercilessly.

No such luck, though. Daniel had to hand it to her for remaining so cool. Now that he thought about it, maybe he'd done this sort of thing too often, maybe she was just immune and he couldn't ever scare her with his sudden appearance? Hmm. He'd have to find new ways. He was an Auror, after all, being sneaky was his job!

"Hey honey," He said softly in her ear as he squeezed her against his chest as they hugged. It was good to see her again, he was glad he'd been released from his duty so early. Daniel playfully winced as she hit him, pretending as if it actually hurt, "Ow! I was merely trying to sympathize!"

Tia wouldn't go so far as to say that he hadn't startled her. Daniel had managed that but his voice was so perfectly familiar that she'd recognized it straight off. Who could be scared by that voice? Not Tia, certainly. She couldn't imagine the sudden appearance of Daniel being anything BUT good. And yes, she was probably used enough to the idea of him dropping in without an invitation to take it in stride. Now if he'd grabbed her or been right behind her when he'd said it, she probably would have jumped. Maybe made one of those embarrassing squeals. As it was, she was spared from having another reason to hit him. She couldn't make it too easy on him after all now could she? Had to work harder than that to unsettle her after all these years.

"You were not." She couldn't quite stop grinning at his being here so the reprimand wasn't very effective. "You were intentionally making light of the situation," Tia accused. Which was fine because it was Daniel. Tia tried to glare at him for effect though because it was just more fun that way. "What are you doing here anyway?" And was it too much to hope he'd be around for awhile? Much as she'd expected the plant to die it was a bit disappointing. A distraction from her failing was always good, especially from her friend since he didn't care for plants at all and would be most convincing in assuring her that it didn't matter.

ugh, typos. i'm tired. danielsocute July 30 2008, 02:50:10 UTC
Hmm. So that was the ticket, was it? Daniel would definitely be considering this later -- maybe his voice was too familiar for her. Perhaps he'd try hiding somewhere next time, popping out at her as if from no where when she least expected it. Ha! He was an ass if he went to such extremes, yet it might be worth it, if only just once.

Daniel couldn't really play up the act. She knew him too well to know that he was making light of the situation and that he wasn't sympathetic in the least. Come on now, you couldn't actually expect him to tear up for a loss of a plant, now could you? Let the owners do the mourning, he'd just be grateful that it was a plant rather than a person or something that, you know, actually mattered.

Er... he wouldn't be telling Tia that specific opinion just yet, she might hit him again.

"Well little lady, if you give me the evil eye like that I might as well not be here!" He pretended to be offended, furrowing his brow at her as he crossed his arms against his chest again. Try as he might, Daniel found it nearly impossible to be upset with Tia on a serious level... even when he did get frustrated with her, it never lasted long. As he spoke, he tilted his head slightly, facing the right side of his face toward her, "Now give us a kiss on the cheek and I'll forgive you for accusing me of such slanderous lies."

Yeah, he'd BETTER not think such things too loudly. Or say them aloud. Something like that. Tia would agree, of course, that it wasn't a tear-worthy moment (unless maybe it had been one of her plants that she was particularly attached to which wouldn't happen because she took care of them) but it still mattered! At least she thought so.

Tia tried to pretend like she didn't care about his threat of leaving, tossing her head dismissively, but the thought of Daniel taking off so soon hit an odd nerve and when she stopped there was an uncertain look on her face. It was short lived though because Tia got a hold of her senses- and she was rather certain there was a hint of amusement in her friend even with his crossed arms. "You wouldn't leave. Not when I need you around for moral support," she said, playing up the dead-plant angle and nearly smiling again as she joked.

"Now give us a kiss on the cheek and I'll forgive you for accusing me of such slanderous lies."

Tia smirked, very tempted to be a smart ass about it. Instead she stretched up to kiss his cheek first. "And just what slanderous lies are those?" she teased. "We both know you hate plants. It's a wonder we're friends, really. Don't know how you can stand coming over." Since she'd met his demands he was stuck here and Tia smiled as she walked into her kitchen for a drink. "Do you want anything?"

Oh, she could pretend all she wanted to, but they both knew the truth. A truth that brought a brighter, wider smile to his face as he watched her act. She was a sucker for him, there could be no denying it. Maybe he was bragging a little, maybe he was a bit cocky when it came to her, but that was the beauty of their friendship: Daniel was so secure in their closeness, secure in how much they cared for one another. Of course it was only the stuff made of friendship, in his mind, but that was mostly because he was a fool and couldn't see what was right in front of his eyes.

He was grateful that she wasn't a smartass, because he always enjoyed kisses from Tia, though he had to smirk as she called him out on the plant hating. Dammit. And here he thought he was doing so well to hide that fact! Har.

"Don't know how I can stand coming over either, to be honest," He teased in reply, following right behind her and playfully poking her in the side. He was still just as immature as ever, really. It was a wonder he was an Auror, "Sure. I'll have whatever you're having."

Tia was both equally sure of their unbreakable closeness and completely clueless as to there being more to it. She and Daniel just were. He'd been her absolute best friend for ages. They belonged around each other. If he didn't come around she was liable to go crazy. There had been stretches of several months when he was training to be an Auror when he hadn't been able to get away and toward the end of each long gap, Tia had spent her time being unaccountably gloomy. Of course she'd never connected the dots. She only knew that she was thrilled to see him when he did get time off. Tia was simply happy when Daniel was around. Lighter. Energized.

She was pleased that he'd followed her and ducked away from his poke (too late), laughing as she pretended to bat his had away. "It's because I let you go on about your job and swoon at all the right moments," Tia said, dramatically. Part of her was aware that by now Daniel was probably making up stories for her- the real thing likely wasn't anything she wanted to hear about. But still, couldn't have all her childhood fantasies stripped from her now could she?

"Juice it is!" she announced brightly. Tia poured two glasses and handed one to her friend. "So really, how long do I have you for? Can we plan an outing or do I have to make every second count and pout when you take off in an hour?" Tia quite enjoyed fake guilt-tripping Daniel, even if it was unfair. She had quite a good pout she could put on at a second's notice.

Why question things if they were so good?? Daniel saw no reason to wonder if there was more or if there was less between them, because like she pointed out, they just were. Perhaps that had to do with the fact that he was a bit... uh... inexperienced in these matters. Truly. It was sad that he'd only really had one or two girlfriends to speak of, but that's because he'd always been busy with other things. Like his school work. Or watching out for his little sister. Or hanging out with Tia. Or now his busy career as an Auror. You know, it took a lot of time out of your life when you were trying to move up the ranks. There was no time for meeting women and dating.

Frankly, he was okay with that. His life didn't seem empty, he wasn't lonely. Mostly because of the fact that he had Tia... he was just too blind to see that their relationship probably looked more than friendly from outside viewers.

"Ah yes," He smirked, chuckling at her response, "Now I remember. I do so love when I can make you go weak in the knees," Here he added an eyebrow wiggle or two, perhaps being a bit insinuative, though they both knew it didn't mean too much.

Daniel got a little bit more serious when she asked how long she had him for, "You got me all day long, you lucky woman, you. So plan wisely," He grinned, before it turned more impish, "Though I'm tempted to lie and say I'll have to leave in an hour, just to see that adorable pout of yours."

Tia could have laughed at Daniel's lack of experience except, well, she couldn't really because she was more or less in the same boat. She'd just...never really felt the urge to be that serious with anyone else.

She'd had a boyfriend or two but it never lasted terribly long or felt...right for lack of a better term. Looking back on them, not a one had seemed like it had the potential to go anywhere. They were nice enough blokes she saw a few times and that was it. Or maybe she had let herself be hurt by one of them (when it was obvious he didn't take it seriously) and in retrospect told herself that she'd seen it that way too. Because being hurt over a boy was silly. They didn't really matter did they? Not if they weren't figures in her life, and none of them had managed to cross that line. Daniel was a figure. He, she would have missed. But she had him and he was here so there wasn't a problem to be seen. Clearly boyfriends were overrated.

At his comment Tia smiled, throwing the back of a hand across her forehead as she feigned a swoon against the counter. It was better distract herself with that than pay attention to his ridiculous insinuations anyway. They had fun joking back and forth. "And you do it so well, love."

Tia's teasing dropped when Daniel answered with a 'you got me all day' though. She gasped excitedly. "Oh good!" As for the rest, "You would like that, wouldn't you," she accused. "Well, too late now. You've already raised my hopes and I know you wouldn't dare let me down now would you, Daniel Winchester?" Tia smiled a bit wickedly (as though she had a wicked streak in her body).

Yeah, see? It didn't matter as long as they were okay with it. Sure, he got teased by his older siblings with his lack of a girlfriend, but he brushed it off. And he'd completely ignore anything they might say about his friendship with Tia. Clearly no one would understand it, they couldn't understand how two people of the opposite sex could be best friends, spends heaps of time together, and not feel anything romantic towards one another.

Though, if there isn't anything romantic to be said about him and Tia, let's not mention how insanely jealous Daniel had gotten whenever she dated. He'd blame it on his being protective, but... well. Maybe there was more to it, he just wouldn't allow himself to go searching for the real cause.

He smiled and tilted his head as he watched her, enjoying how excited she seemed to get. Daniel was glad he could surprise her on days like this. His schedule was so often chaotic, he couldn't exactly give dates to when he would be busy or free, "Nah, I wouldn't let you down, darlin," His grin grew wider as he drawled out the words, charmed by that supposed wicked smile she had on her face. No, she didn't have a wicked bone in her body, but it was quite endearing that she tried to pretend as if she did. Why, he could kiss her squeeze her cheek, it was too cute!

"So what shall we do, then, oh mighty planner?"

"Hmmm." What could they do? Or rather, how best to spend her Daniel Time?

"I could cook for you," Tia offered. "But, there's not a whole lot here right now." Or ever? Tia went in spurts of being really good at cooking for herself and then she'd let the cupboards run down until she felt inspired for the store again. Or maybe it was just that she didn't make 'meals' terribly often. It wasn't hardly worth it if you were only feeding one. When she had company Tia was perfectly happy to cook for people. "I mean, I was just at the store but I wasn't super hungry so I didn't really stock up. But I'm sure we could make something," she said confidently. Probably something healthy. That tended to happen when you were into growing things.

Anyway, "Or we could go out. We could get in an end-of-season swim at the lake! Or just hang out around there. Something low key for your day off?" Tia wouldn't want to monopolize the decision making process after all.

Daniel took a moment to look thoughtful as he stroked his chin, raising a brow at Tia as she suggested she could cook for him. That was tempting, in all honesty. It was rare when he got a good home cooked meal. Well, forget the fact that he cooked for himself all the time. It was different when someone else made the food, or at least it was in his opinion. Plus, he was just amused by the idea of Tia cooking. It wouldn't be the first time, and he already knew how cute she was when she cooked... ahem, anyway. Right. He was thinking.

"Hmm," He hummed, still looking as if he were thinking though he'd more or less decided, "Hmm. I think I prefer something more low key, if you don't mind. I'm always out and about with the job, I kind of just want to stay inside..." He gave her a sheepish sort of grin and a shrug as an apology, though he knew she probably wouldn't mind.

"What could we make here? If you don't have anything we could go out, then. Or we could apparate to my place," He suggested with another eyebrow waggle.

"Oh, absolutely." If Daniel wanted to stay in then staying in it was! Seriously, whatever made her best mate happy was what Tia felt like doing. She nodded her agreement. No question. It made sense that he'd want to just stop somewhere and relax. They could wander out anytime. Today they'd stay right here then. She liked having Daniel over anyway. And this way she didn't have to share him with anybody.

What could they make? "Um." Tia turned around, looking at the closed cupboards and mentally cataloging what there was to be eaten. "Something good?" she ventured. Tia broke into a self-deprecating smile. It wasn't as though she'd had time to plan. They could think of something surely. "We can experiment. Or you can pick a meal and I'll make it happen," she nodded solemnly. It was Daniel's day off, she could make anything work for that kind of occasion.

"Oooh, your place?" Tia grinned, playing along. Because that's all it was, clearly; joking. "Is it cleaner? You really want me over at your flat making a mess?" she reminded. Not that Tia planned to throw things around Daniel's house. It was only in her own space that she tended to sometimes forget to put things where they went. Still, they were talking cooking, which was liable to be messy in the first place. She continued to smile. "Only if you'd rather. I haven't seen it in ages but you are already here." If he was wanting to not run all over the place, Tia had no problem putting Daniel up here.

He was already feeling like a lazy arse having told her he wanted to stay in, but honestly, Daniel was always out and about with his job. Part of him had wanted to go back to his place and bi-pass hanging out with Tia altogether, since he was rather tired and worn out. However, his longing to see her always won out, no matter how drained he was from a long week. He couldn't not come over and see her, so he was just glad that she'd be okay with staying in and cooking for two -- though he'd gladly work up the energy to help her with that. He wasn't a complete scoundrel!

Daniel chuckled at her response, "Something good. Now there's a thought," She was cute.

He smacked his palm lightly against his forehead at her next words, "You're right. My flat is in a perfectly clean condition, I definitely couldn't have you coming along to ruin that, now could I?" He smirked with a shrug as he teased. It was true. As far as cleanliness goes, Daniel was a bit of a neat freak. Kind of OCD in that manner. It had gotten worse once he'd moved into his own place, always needing to keep things tidy. But that wasn't to say that he'd care if they went over and made a mess with cooking. All for the sake of fun and good food, right? Wouldn't bother him, he wouldn't mind cleaning it up.

"I feel like a woman right now," He admitted with a 'manly' sort of pout, "I can't decide what to do." Har.

"See," Tia nodded seriously. "I'm a friend." They wouldn't want her upsetting the perfect order of Daniel's flat. How could he rest after she left if he had to spend all that time fixing things again? The thought of it made her smile. Tia didn't understand how anyone could be that neat, but it seemed to work for Daniel so she assumed it must work out somehow. It would be cruel to knowingly mess that up when he needed a break.

Tia laughed at his next comment. "WELL then. I guess that makes me the man. I'll just have to make all of your decisions for you then. We'll stay and cook. Though, really, if you're playing the girl I should be making you cook for me," she said pointedly. "But we'll fudge that one. Sit down," she ordered, pointing to a free chair since her kitchen lead directly to her dinning nook (it wasn't big enough to be called a room in it's own right).

"Do you need a massage first? Some tea? A nap?" she teased. Honestly though, if Tia had thought her friend was that wiped out she would have had no problem mothering him and forcing him to get some rest on her couch while she made him food.
