But United fans will be looking at the fee, making an assumption that it won’t be used to fund the Glazers’ debt and
will be spent on other players and will think its perhaps all for the best.
There was quite a nice piece in
The Times the other day which put Cristiano Ronaldo as United’s 50th best player ever - one behind Mark Robins. It wasn’t a slight on his undoubted talent, but, as the piece said - United legends don’t want to play for Real Madrid.
United legends stay at the club (Giggs, Scholes), they track back and tackle (Rooney) and when they kiss the badge, they do it to taunt Scousers (Neville).
Ronaldo's an incredibly talented player, but his talent was most used to further himself and his own ‘brand’. United often benefited from that talent as a happy by-product and we’ll miss the goals, though not the hands on hips, the shrugs, the eyes to the skies pleading from the referee. When he was doing that, he was our pratt. Now he’s going to be somebody else’s it’s different entirely…
