Regnum Defende

She fell through a whirlwind and landed hard on a strange, furry floor. Next to her she saw a pair of long, blue legs saying something that the whirlwind had given her the ability to understand. The voice, not the words, made her feel as if ice-cold water travelled down her spine. Dark, rich and familiar. She turned and looked. It was him, yet not. He smiled a kind, relaxed smile.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

Her mouth tried to form a response. "I feel... strange..."

"No wonder. Do you know why you're here?"

There had been a string of baffling information as she travelled through that whirlwind. But lying on a furry mat and talking to a man who she knew so well and did not know at all was beyond everything.

"They said... as I flew. Why me?"

"It seems we need agents from every vital point of our history now that we have the technology. Before everyone else have it too," he added wryly.

"So this is for England?"

"It is indeed for England. The United Kingdom nowadays."

"Kingdom!" She sat up abruptly. "Is the king here too?"

"We have a queen now. Elizabeth II."

"A female ruler!" her face lit up.

"Yes indeed! It was Richard the Lionhearted in your days."

"He came back from the Holy Land, did he not?"

"He did, for a short while. Until he was killed by an archer."

"Killed by an archer!" she cried out.

"Look, I'm sorry I said that!" he said anxiously. "Don't be sad! What you did then - I don't know what it was, but it made a difference! That's why you're here. It's not individual kings or queens that made England and the UK what it is. It's people like you..."

"But why me? Why not Robin?"

"Robin?"

"YES, ROBIN!" she shouted and started to cry. He embraced her and she leaned into the embrace thankfully, not feeling any pressing demands from this man.

"It doesn't make sense..."

"Few things do, believe me," he answered and held her tighter. "What's your name?"

"Marian."

"Marian? Not... Robin Hood?" he said incredulously.

"How did you know?"

"Blimey... Robin Hood... So he was real..."

It was her turn to look incredulous.

"You look like a man I know."

"Robin?"

"No, another man."

"The sheriff of Nottingham?" he said with a smirk that was familiar.

She snorted. "A clue: no!" she answered.  "Sir Guy."

"Guy of Gisborne!"

"Do you know of him too?"

"Well... Marian," he said decisively, "There's loads to talk about. I'm sorry I upset you earlier, that's not why I was assigned to take care of you. I'm sure you were chosen for this mission because you can handle this. But we'll do what we can to not shock you too much," he said in a warm and caring voice.

They were still sitting on the floor in a non-descript room, embracing. His hand cupped her cheek. It was him, yet not. Not better, not worse. It had never been about that. Always him and Robin.

"God, you're beautiful, Marian. They should've warned me. And I never expected a lady from 1193 to turn up in combat trousers and a leather jacket!" He smiled a wide smile that she'd never seen before and it made her heart lurch.

It's sad that he's never smiled so much before - oh, right. Strange that he should turn up in this shape. The Lord moves in mysterious ways...

There was a knock on the door; they broke apart and rose from the floor. A young, skinny man with dark skin came in.

"A Saracen!" Marian exclaimed. Both men laughed and she blushed.

"Lucas," said the young man, "Harry wants you to report when you're ready."

"We're not ready yet, Tarik. I must introduce her to her mentor."

"What happens now?" Marian asked when Tarik left.

"Everything," he said and gave a rich chuckle. "Beyond this dull room lies the rest of 2010, Marian."

"Your name is Lucas," she said.

"It is, Marian. I'm Lucas," he said and stretched out his hand to greet her properly. She gave him the wrong hand, as if expecting him to escort her as a knight would his lady.

Instead, he pulled her closer in a possessive way and his face was serious, his lips fuller. She recognised that expression, but for once she did not mind. Again, he smiled and relaxed, letting go of his hold. She had anticipated a kiss.

"Come, Marian. You must meet your mentor," he said.

"What's a mentor?"

"In this case, it's another agent from history who's been with us a little longer and knows a bit more."

"Can't you be my mentor?"

"You won't be rid of me, don't worry. I supervise you both."

"Good! So, who's my mentor?"

"A young man from the 1920s. Clever. He... has double identities, a bit like you. Has his own... place... to look after. He works for us anyway, for the adventure. Just like you, he found it odd that he was chosen. He kept recommending a sweet old lady."

"Really," she said, not taking in all he said. It was a confusing situation, he was confusing.

They walked along a corridor and Lucas spoke again: "You'll only stay another hour before we send you back, not too much information this first time. Make sure to rest afterwards."

"No problem," she answered, starting to feel excited. She would fight for England, through the ages!

In the room was another man, Marian recognised him instantly. He smiled charmingly. Marian felt numb.

"This is Anthony. Or Victor, if you prefer," said Lucas and introduced the beardless man. How long had it been since she had seen that cleft in his chin?

Things were never easy, it seemed. So be it. She would do anything for England.
