I figured it would be time I take a look at this movie. I am quite sad to say though that years ago I had quite liked the books, and I was quite thrilled of the first movie. Since then... It's just been going downhill. And this movie proved just that for me.
It made me think about it: did I grow up (even more LOL), did the whole frenzy and craziness play a role in me losing interest? Probably yes, when a project gets this kind of hype I tend to lose interest, it just gets too much for me and takes the whole focus away from the actual project.
But more than that, where the movies could have actually corrected the mistakes from the book and made something even better out of a basic idea that was not all that bad, they just turned into cash machines. No creativity, no independence, no interest in trying to create their own place in the whole universe of the books. Only the first movie had that, which is probably why I liked it best. No matter what one may think of it, it had a little something to it that made it original in its directing and image quality, the atmosphere was created in a way that could have been screwed up. Like in the following movies.
Since then, I went to see the second movie in the theaters, was disappointed, went to see the third movie, was disappointed and altogether gave up. Rented this one for the sake of seeing until the end out of pure curiosity more than anything else.
It really just became a transition to the screen with absolutely...nothing attractive to it. You can just tell that they count on the audience of the book to come in and bring the cash along, no effort what so ever to add some sort of value. What a shame...
Anyway, coming to this movie, it is in line with what I said above. It covers the first half of the last book, lingering forever during the first 45 minutes on parts that could have easily taken only half the time. You could tell it was purely for audience satisfaction.
All in all, the movie is ok I guess, in that it is nothing more or nothing less than the book. So if you liked the book, you probably will like the movie. If you didn't like the book, avoid avoid avoid. If like me you thought the book was ok (leaving aside how weird some of the storyline has become) but that you were hoping for the film to bring in a little something more... You will be highly disappointed.
At least they did go a little bit gory, which I honestly was wondering about considering how gross the book had been... One would give the audience what the audience read, right?...
