So I have this crazy friend who wants to know, if you were going to get an ultraportable notebook, which one would be best for vidding? (Yes, it has to be a laptop.) Like, the laptop that is ideal for carrying around to write in cafes and/or steal wireless to check your email and also a vidding power machine. Because those aren't completely ( Read more... )

I can't help on laptops; keep in mind you're inevitably gonna need an external hard drive, though.

Well, I have these small and easily movable external drives, and I can take a couple of them with me and my laptop when I travel. However, my computer gets unhappy when I use a firewire for vidding; I use USB.

Hey, I know whereof I speak! I've edited video in Premiere, and it was GHASTLY. And I hear nothing but complaints from people about its crashiness.

It was when I was ripping a DVD. Kept stalling. Switched to USB and neve noticed a problem.

Heh. I buy these Simpletech external drives; they come in many sizes and they plug and play and for whatever reason USB has worked better than firewire, at least when I'm ripping DVDs, and I have no idea why. But they're light enough and I've traveled with laptop and an external or two, and have been able to vid ( ... )

They all die. All of them. It's just a matter of time. Sometimes in as little as 3 months. They take all your data with them when they go.

With two drives, you can back up to both, and still have your data when the first one inevitably fails.

That said, they're pretty cheap nowadays. Less than $1 a GB.
