Fanfic Recs if anyone cares

Mar 19, 2007 15:05

Agh! C is in Japan and buying lemon flavoured alcoholic beverages and pink cigarettes from vending machines in Tokyo. I am so filled with jealousy! And I don't even like cigarettes!
I am bored, and I suppose I could do something constructive, like write my own stories, but the ones I'm about to rec are better anyway, so whateves.

Harry Potter
Okay, so I wanna go with stuff I haven't rec'd before...but if you see any repeats here, that's just because they're so damn good.
Also, nearly all of these are slightly AU, simply because they were written before books 5 and/or 6. That's kinda what you get in this fandom, tho.

We'll start with, hands down the best fanfiction I have ever read, and quite honestly, probably one of the top five pieces of fantasy fiction I've read, period.:
Saving Connor
by Lightning on the Waves
Pairing: Primarily Draco/Harry, with tonnes of het, femslash and slash.
Rating: Fluctuates, from generally PG during the first few years, to PG-13 in the later years, to R and NC-17 for violence and sex in certain chapters.
Genre: Dramatically AU, Romance, Horror, Fantasy, Drama, Angst, Humour -- it has some of everything.

I only began this on a whim, because the premise was NOT my thing...Harry was actually born a twin, and his brother, Connor, is the boy who lived. Through a series of events not fully explained until several books in, Lily and James survived the attack by Voldemort, and Lily has been training Harry secretly ever since to be his brother's protector.
Doesn't sound like your thing? Read it anyway.
Never in fanfic, and only rarely in published work have I ever seen such a richly, beautifuly constructed fantasy world. Manners, rituals, spells, magics, characters, laws, histories and more, all woven masterfully together. I almost wish this wasn't a HP fanfic so it could be published.
Harry and Draco are the primary characters, but very quickly Snape and a host of OCs become pivitol to the plot as well. Don't let the promise of OCs frighten you off...there is only one character of the dozens who might be considered a Mary Sue, but even she manages to not be nearly so annoying as real characters like Tonks.
The story is now finished, and covers all seven years. The characterisation is fantastic. The writing is sweet, funny, and devistatingly painful at times, sad and lovely...I could go on forever.
Just...be prepared to devote some major time to this. In total, the word count ranges somewhere about 3 MILLION WORDS. I've been reading it for about seven months, sometimes for hours a day, and am only on book six.
Give it time, and get ready to fall in love...

Get in Touch With Your Inner Snape
by Willidan
Pairing: Snape/Harry
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Romance, Humour.

Post war, Harry can't get away from all his adoring fans and it's pissing him off. After taking up a position at Hogwarts, the attention from the students pushes him over the edge, and he decides the best course of action is to defer the attention...to Snape...by convincing everyone that not only is he equally responsible for the victory against Voldemort, but that he's also a decent, likeable guy...Sufficed to say, such arguements aren't convincing anyone of anything other than that Harry wants into Snape's pants.
The sequel "What Do You Do With a Professor Like Severus" -- http://inkstain.inkquill.net/isf/archive/7/whatdo.html -- is equally enjoyable.

Snape, the Home Fries Nazi
by pir8fancier
Pairing: Snape/Harry
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Angst, Drama, Humour, Romance.

I can't tell you what inspired me to read this after seeing the summary, but I'm glad I did. Post-War Snape owns a restaurant in Arizona and Harry comes to visit. Look, I'm not going to do this justice. Just go, read, and be pleasantly surprised...

What Friends Are For
by Mia Snape
Pairing: Snape/Harry
Rating: R
Genre: Humour, romance
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1503103/1/

Post-War, Harry is working at Hogwarts and through years of working alongside one another in the war effort, and then as professors, Harry and Snape are close friends. Enter a new professor, one David Argot, who is very interested in Snape, and Harry is suddenly forced to reevaluate his own relationship with Snape.
Good for a laugh, and not too very OOC, which is always good.

Correspondance
by Cybele and Snaples
Pairing: Snape/Harry
Rating: NC-17
Genre: Angst

*fans self* This is just smutty and hot and kinky and *fun*!! Harry and Snape exchange letters during potion class, getting more and more obscene...after class, the real fun begins.
The power play here is so terrific.

Also, any and everything by Maya and Telanu...cause, yeah.
And, I was going to include other fandoms, but this went on long enough. So I shall do another post, a bit later...
